I have been intrigued by hybrids for a while but too afraid that I would mess up my pickups if I tried to make one. If anybody else is on the same boat, let me tell you that making hybrids is fairly easy and lots of fun. You just need to be careful and gentle and take notes about what colored wires go where etc. I am glad I finally tried it.
Now on to the main topic! PGb/Tone Zone Hybrid??? I know some of you are thinking that it is a strange idea (to say the least). I love my PBb but like many people on these boards, I always wished for a litter hotter (overwound) version of it. Since I had this TZ sitting around I said what the hell and gave it a try.
How does it sound? Hot, thick, and rich. Sounds a lot like Custom Custom. I used the A2 magnet from PG. It ended up being 12.2K but sounds/feels hotter to me. Bass is very strong. It is not tight like A5 but very big without being boomy or muddy. Palm mutes sound very good. Mids are very very thick as you would expect since both PG and TZ have lots of mids. Highs are very sweet and buttery. No sign of shrillness/excessive sizzle at all. Oh BTW, pinch harmonics jump out with no effort.
The way it turned out was too hot and thick for me although tonally it is very good. Then, I lowered it a bit and raised the screws on the PG side in order to add more PG in the mix. It worked like a charm! It opened it up quite a bit. I plan to keep it for a while at least. I have not found my ultimate bridge pickup yet. I still think an overwound PG (9.5 - 10K) would be better. Might even try the Virtual Hot PAF but I will get some mileage out of this hybrid first.
I thought some of you would find this hybrid (marrying SD and Dimarzio) interesting so decided to share it with the forum.
