Just Made A PGb/TONE ZONE Hybrid!!!

I have been intrigued by hybrids for a while but too afraid that I would mess up my pickups if I tried to make one. If anybody else is on the same boat, let me tell you that making hybrids is fairly easy and lots of fun. You just need to be careful and gentle and take notes about what colored wires go where etc. I am glad I finally tried it.

Now on to the main topic! PGb/Tone Zone Hybrid??? I know some of you are thinking that it is a strange idea (to say the least). I love my PBb but like many people on these boards, I always wished for a litter hotter (overwound) version of it. Since I had this TZ sitting around I said what the hell and gave it a try.

How does it sound? Hot, thick, and rich. Sounds a lot like Custom Custom. I used the A2 magnet from PG. It ended up being 12.2K but sounds/feels hotter to me. Bass is very strong. It is not tight like A5 but very big without being boomy or muddy. Palm mutes sound very good. Mids are very very thick as you would expect since both PG and TZ have lots of mids. Highs are very sweet and buttery. No sign of shrillness/excessive sizzle at all. Oh BTW, pinch harmonics jump out with no effort.

The way it turned out was too hot and thick for me although tonally it is very good. Then, I lowered it a bit and raised the screws on the PG side in order to add more PG in the mix. It worked like a charm! It opened it up quite a bit. I plan to keep it for a while at least. I have not found my ultimate bridge pickup yet. I still think an overwound PG (9.5 - 10K) would be better. Might even try the Virtual Hot PAF but I will get some mileage out of this hybrid first.

I thought some of you would find this hybrid (marrying SD and Dimarzio) interesting so decided to share it with the forum.

Most would find it... blasphemous. I dig it, but everyone on here who swears by their Duncans would probably threaten to hunt you down and slay you.

lol :laugh2: Who says a hybrid with SD and DiMarzio can't have good tone?

That's a really cool idea, but just make sure you get us some clips some time soon so we can hear for ourselves... and so you can laugh in Aceman's face! :arms:

Re: Just Made A PGb/TONE ZONE Hybrid!!!

The truest of all hybrids, vintage output and hot output, bassy and trebly, Duncan and Dimarzio.

Hey - If it rocks, it rocks and I'll be the first to grab the electrified stair rail as punishment. But I agree -careful if you're blasphenin' on Pearly's. Somethings go great together, Peanut butter and chocolate, for instance. And then there are other things like sushi grade raw tuna, and peanut butter. Both great things by themselves -but not good together....Dimarzio and Duncan are usually tuna/peanut butter kind of things.

That's disgusting! Just hand me the peanut butter and hot sauce :D

Re: Just Made A PGb/TONE ZONE Hybrid!!!

I eat peanut butter and sardines all the time... it's great! Almost kind of "asian" flavour.

Re: Just Made A PGb/TONE ZONE Hybrid!!!

You are sick! not a about the DuncanMarzio or DiDunacun or whatever you will call it. But sardines and peanutbutter....

Re: Just Made A PGb/TONE ZONE Hybrid!!!

I've always wondered what would happen if a ceramic mag was put in a Tone Zone......would it tighten up that crazy bottom end??

how do you feel the bass tightness on this hybrid pickup? any comparison to another SD pickup?

I would not call the bass real tight but it is big - not boomy or muddy just thick. Power chords sound very full. A good comparison to a SD pickup would be Custom Custom.

Everyone, I didn't mean to post this and disappear. I have been very busy last couple of days. For those who aske for clips, I am sorry but I don't have a way to record on the computer. I am behind times when it comes to recording gear.

For those who called what I did blasphemy, it is just an experiment. They are just two bobbins with wires on them after all! I know I know, on these forums, we worship these bobbins with wires but I don't think I am going to guitar hell for committing this sin! Can I say 10 "Hail Seymours" and be forgiven?! On the other hand, there is nothing you can say to be forgiven for eating peanut butter, sardines and sauce!!!

Seriously, this is not a weird sounding pickup. Just a 12K CC clone. I would have no problem keeping it but I want to stay in vintage territory with my Hamer. I know one of these days the SD Custom Shop is going to get a call from me for a 10K PGb.
