Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

John Mayer's Mankini
You can look forward to hearing a lot from me soon.

I'm recording a solo basement album for my family for Christmas, not a holiday album, just my songs, mostly adapted for acoustic.

I picked up a Blue Microphones "Snowball," condenser mic, a Blue Microphones "Ringer" shockmount (that is absolutely huge!) and a few mic stands.

I'll be building a "recording studio" in my basement now for the recording process.

I will document the setup with pictures! And of course I'll post songs once I get some stuff tracked.

Wish me luck!

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

good luck! sounds like a cool project. neat looking mic too.

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

Thanks! I will be focusing on acoustic guitar for my "main" guitar, but I'll be throwing electric guitar accents on most of it, I think.

I will probably get Addictive Drums for the drumming portion --- I tried using a midi controller and sequencing them myself, but it's just too tedious.

I'll be using a P-Bass into GearBox for the bass tracks, and my AD15VT and Blackheart mic'd for electric guitar.

Should be a lot of fun!

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

Cool dude! Cant wait to see pics.

Should be an "intimate" setup --- not sure if I'm going to hang blankets for sound deadening --- I think a little concrete ambience might add to the recording!

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

All my gear looks like crap down there

UPDATED WITH CLIPS

So tonight I recorded some clips. I recorded these directly into Audacity, with no effects, no EQ, no nothin'. Just the mic to the program, exported to your ear.

As usual, excuse the slop, etc.

First is a single guitar part - just me playing in front of the mic. Dave Matthews Band's "Jimi Thing"

Here is a 3 part thing I made, to see how the mic will mix with itself when I record multiple guitar parts. I recorded a "main," a "solo" and an "accent." Again, no effects, no EQ, just the mic to the program. I turned the main part down 3dB, and I turned the accent part down 9dB. This clip is very short.

John Mayer's "I Don't Trust Myself"

Aight fellas, let's hear it! What say ye?

wow, sounds super great. dig your acoustic playing. I was going to say try reaper instead of audacity...until I listened!

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

I use to have a basement for recording, I had drapes on two walls a big sofa and an area rug. The acoustics were great, just the right amount of reflections in the room. I think you might need to kill some of those hard surfaces.

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

Let me know how that mic works out. I am looking to pick one up for acoustic and vocals.

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

Ah cool.....haha I wanna have basement too:D
Like that spacious look, reflects on the recording in a good way, do not make it all too dead acousticwise...that is just sterile boredom.
Like your clips a great deal, acoustic playing is always a pleasure!

Big thanks! I rarely ever play leads on acoustic, but that little Mayer clip sounded good to my ear --- the mix wasn't great, but all in all, the sound coming out of the guitar is good. Guitar is a Guild D30 with flame maple back and sides --- a very bright guitar.

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

that sounds frickin' rad man. just straight in without gearbox it sounds more natural, and the room you're recording in really works. i can hear all the nuances and little tidbits in your playing very well!

Thanks!

GearBox will only accept signal from Line6 devices, so this Blue Microphone can't be processed by GearBox's virtual preamps and effects.

I made a full-ish song last night but had such terrible problems with latency and time stretching that I had to trash it all. I am ditching Audacity for reaper in hopes of victory.

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

huh. well then what are you interfacing the mic to the computer with? i always just run mics(and anything else) into the toneport even if i'm not using gearbox.

The Blue "Snowball" is a large diaphragm condenser that gets it's +48V from USB, and also uses USB for signal transmission. It does not even have an XLR connection on it, just a USB connection.

Plus, as a condenser (requiring +48V phantom power,) you couldn't run it through a Line6 TonePort GX or UX1 anyhow, as they have no +48V phantom power.

In Audacity or other DAWs, it shows up as a device all it's own, much like the TonePort or a MIDI keyboard.

Thanks Bill. It's a very "up-front" sound --- just what I'd expect from a large diaphragm condenser.

A lot of folks don't know this about me, but I have 3 years of Audio Technology education from Virginia Tech. I was half wanting to do that as a career and half wanting a secure spot in the job market. Pragmatism (a GIS degree) won, but I studied a heckuva lot on all things related to recording, sound reinforcement, producing, engineering, etc. I was very lucky to have this opportunity without a full commitment to recording as a career. It's funny how cheap / lowball I am with home recording after the experience I had at VT, where it was all good stuff, all the time.

My professor would pull his hair out if he saw what I call a home recording rig.

Anyways, thanks, and I will keep you all posted!

Re: Just picked up a lot of recording gear!

Yessss!

Was gonna reply after the first clip but the second showed definite progress. I guess that was the point, huh? The fist clip to my ears obviously needed more clarity. It was there in the second, great job, keep it up.
I'm envious, wish I had the space that you do, to create as you wish.
Very cool & if the advancement from the first track to the second continues you are definitely on the right track (no pun intended). Keep going bro, I look forward to more.

Peace,

Darrin
