Just picked up my first JBJ

I just scored an old JB from ebay, and I thought it was pretty cool to have this, my favorite pickup, wound by MJ. Without paying the CS prices. :naughty:.

And as an added bonus, it's ZEBRA!!! Looks in relatively decent shape from the pictures.

I had a DCJ before, but I like the JB more. This has been taken out of a custom guitar made in 1988 apparently, so the pickup should be from that time. I've been informed that leads are around 5 to 6 inches. So what do you guys think? I'll be putting this in a LP copy, all mahog body and neck, rosewood fretboard.

Well I think it is really cool. I just discovered how much I love a JB and Alnico II Pro set with 250K pots.

Others will spray you with their hot-diarrhea-lava spewing from their mouth, because you putting a JB in a mahogany Les Paul.

Thanks. I don't know man, I think more than a few here are open to the idea that JB can work in a thick LP, it just depends on the individual instrument rather and the ear. I personally liked first time I tried the JB on a SG and LP, but then I went a quest to first "improve" the JB (mag swaps, pole pieces) and then replace it altogether with "better" or tighter sounding pickups. Recently I realized that for that axe, the JB was "it". I thought I wanted the tightest sounding pickups I could get for that instrument, but then I missed the "feel" of JB. Tight sounding pickups do lack dynamics, I mean damn awful. JB is more "open" and dynamic in comparison.

Great score.
Enjoy.
I love a JB in a mahogany body, maple top, rosewood or ebony finger broad guitar.

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

Awesome! You might like it in mahogany, you might not...you NEVER know until you TRY! I've heard about studios having JBs on hand because they know what they do and how to record them...in ANY guitar!

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

I have a question for JBJ owners. Now the ones that were made in late 80s, did they come with the silkscreen SD logo like above? I've only seen ones without logos. Thanks.

None of my late 80s JBJs with that sticker on the bottom has the logo. No do any other of my Duncan's with that type is sticker on the bottom.

Yikes! Can anybody else confirm please? Scott or Evan? Wonder if I got scammed... :banghead:

Well at least, it still sounds like a JB, just smoother and juicier and slightly lower output, as if the magnet has been aged.

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

Call SD tomorrow and get to cust serv. ask them.

Did you pay extra for a JBJ over what you would pay just for a JB?

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

I received a response from the SD team, and indeed they were making them with or without logos in the late 80s. Awesome!

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

No I only described what it was. But since you brought up a good point, I responded to the SD email with a link for pictures. Hopefully it won't change their view.

agreed. hope you have the real deal and didn't get ripped off. that label on the back looks like it's pretty solid and not been tampered with.

my concern would be how 'new' it looks for something that could be around 25 years old. also try to reach out to Scott Miller, if you haven't already. maybe there's some additional indicator about the construction that can help them nail it down.

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

How would I get in touch with Scott?
Keith Merrow was very nice on responding to my query.

Call, get to the operator and ask for Scott Miller. Bickety-bam and it's done.

Re: Just picked up my first JBJ

None of my 80's Duncan pickups have logos. I only have 5 of them now... haha ;o)

To really blow your mind... MY R8 Les Paul has an 80's DDJ reverse zebra in bridge and an 80's JBJ reverse zebra in the neck.
