Just saw Journey

Steve Perry isn't the original singer for Journey....it was Gregg Rollie who also played keys and was an original member after leaving Santana w/Neal Schon to form Journey. He's the guy singing "Black Magic Woman".

The original stuff was less pop & more progressive rock kinda' stuff....

The new guy singing for them is Steve Augeri & he sounds pretty damn close to Steve Perry.

I Knew that and I every album Journey did before Steve Perry...Also knew about Schon/Rollie both in Santana/Abraxas etc...

He wasn't on Abraxas (Rollie was though), but you would be well advised to pick up Santana's self-titled album (the one with the surreal "man in space" cover). Schon and Santana's duelling leads are phenomenal, and the songs are great. Best Santana album IMO.

Yup, he's on Caravanserai. I think that was their last album with the band before they left to form Journey. My dad had all of those on vinyl.

I much prefer all the stuff Schon did after Santana and even before Steve Perry, though the Perry era Journey stuff is great also....Poppy,but it sold records..

Re: Just saw Journey

To make a sports analogy, I think Neal Schon tends to get overlooked due to the fact that he tried to "fit in" to the team concept of Journey and didn't really step out too much. He got to play his short solo as a part of a song, but he was never really showcased. To me, its kind of like the idea of a Basketball player who could score 30 a game, but decides to pass more for the good of the team and only scores 18 per game but the team wins more games.

I guess you cant really argue, Journey sold a gazillion records in the 80's and I'm sure Neal Schon can afford to indulge any GAS fantasy he still has!

And now he can do solo projects and wail to his hearts content doing any damn thing he feels like!

Well put jayK. He has done very well for Journey and himself.

Wail on Neal! Play on! Any Way You Want It now. :arms: :arms:

Re: Just saw Journey

Neal is a master at playing understated leads to fit the song. The signature lick throughout "Who's Crying Now" is a perfect example. Easy to play, difficult to keep as "clean" as he did.

Then again, he can wail when he likes. The band once said, in the early days of MTV (when they still played music), that they referred to him as the "human chainsaw".

Re: Just saw Journey

hehe, my wife is like B&C's wife...no Steve Perry...no Journey. They came down here a few times, saw the original line up with Greg singing lead and later with Steve Perry. They are awesome live and Neal rips! That album is Santana III...killer dual guitars and you can tell Carlo's trademark style riffs vs Neals fluid-fast riffs...he was 18 years old when he joined Santana, he is one of the greats in my book.
