Just saw my first Marshall Major!

Sorry that I don't have pics, but I was too excited not to post. I was at Guitar Center returning a preamp tonight when I spotted a used Marshall head. Took a closer look and saw that it was a Major. No extra holes drilled in the chassis. Not sure if it was modded in any way internally. Gigantic transformers, four big bottles in the back. What a wonderful piece of rock history!

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

I plug into 100W and 120W amps that can be frighteningly loud, shaking the room and punching you straight in the ear. The idea of 200+W tube amps is just crazy. It would be stage volume at 1......but a really fat sounding 1.

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

A buddy of mine used to have an old Major he never used it so I borrowed it for a while.

I was surprised by how different it sounded compared to a "smaller" 50 or 100 Marshall but it was still a cool sound.

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

My guitar mentor of sorts back when I was a kid , was a collector of vintage gear when it was not the cool thing to do.

He had a re tolexed Major in purple with a matching cab (not sure what speakers the majors had) It was painfully loud...but alot of fun to play through. They are much cleaner and lese midrangey than a superlead/bass. It was more similar to his Hiwatts, really.

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

That is cool! What were they asking, just out of curiosity?

You really should return for pics. :D

Amp was priced $2,195. Guitar Center in Manchester, CT.

I considered plugging in because I may never see another Major, but I am way too sloppy and unskilled. That, and getting the amp up to a satisfying level would probably cause everybody in the store to crap their pants.

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

That is within driving distance for me. I should take.the 335 up there and wail on it for a bit.

Probably a few hours for me to drive, but let's all go and pummel that thing into submission. When will we next get this chance?

Fixed. :D

Somebody bring a SSS Strat and play some Ritchie Blackmore with it!

Re: Just saw my first Marshall Major!

I can bring my Kenny Wayne Shepherd strat, since no-one seems to want to buy it.

Problem is Majors do not have enough gain for Blackmore...you need that overdrive from the tape preamp.
