JVM question...

I saw a JVM at my local GC over the weekend...it was the 100wt head with the single row of controls (single/dbl channel). They wanted 870 for the unit but it didn't work...plugged in and the pilot light came on...but no sound whatsoever...throw me a few clues as to the problem.

Not like I need it, but a lil repair job like this might give me something to occupy my time and make a couple of bucks!

Re: JVM question...

That wasn't a JVM. The JVM 410H has 2 rows of knobs. Or was it the 210H which has I guess you can call it 3 rows. One row, then two rows on top of one another next to it.

The Vintage Modern has a single row of controls.

Now, if it wasn't giving any sound, that's a red flag right there, as long as you made sure it was plugged in to a cabinet. I've seen heads at GC not plugged in to cabs but plugged in for power.

I have a JVM410H, but I don't really know what to tell you seeing as how mine works.

That's my other red flag...the simple fact that it was sitting it's broken self in a guitar centre! I don't shop there-it was merely a diversion from a family gathering of the pompous 'publicans and other high class snobbery that tends to invade my groove occasionally.

My local guitar centre is atrocious...the amps are junk, the guitars hanging on the wall have been finger banged by more nitwits than Jenna Jameson, it is truly a cesspit of commercialism gone terribly wrong! Support your Mom & Pop shop!

Re: JVM question...

I've started a thread on other forums about the dangers of buying demo heads from GC. IF they'd invest in a little time and money to make sure every tube amp had a correct speaker load, it would probably save them some dough.

The local GC had a B-52 head with no output - most likely a blown output tranny from running with no load.

The scary part is what if you buy a slightly damaged head that doesn't give up the ghost until after your 30 days are up. Then you are screwed.

It's like you get all the newbies just throwing things together without a clue...the amp was plugged into a cab-with the wrong input/impedence selection, and with a guitar instrument cable! I realize we were all newbies once-but I had the benefit of old hands taking an interest in my future...and I listened! Now kids have a forum like this where they can hang out and learn it all...right!
