What you'd find is that there's one or two really special OD pedals you own that do what you want, then you'd plug into the Klon and find that it's another one that's really special. That's the funny thing about circuits. There's some that are just perfect.
The Klon isn't transparent, but it's got a sound. It's sort of like a mic preamp. There's average ones, and then there's the really good ones.
I'd love to have one just to compare to other "clean" boost that I like.

Same here . . . just want to 'test' one for a few days,to see what this mythical harry-poter-phoenix-like thing does to my amps.
I'd love to have one just to compare to other "clean" boost that I like.

A good friend of mine has a gold Klon that he let me borrow for a while. I got to know it quite well. Did I like it? Yes! Did I love it? Yes! It's quite an amazing pedal and it has its own mojo going on for sure.
However, I was able to get the identical range of sounds, but with much more gain on tap, with a Maxon OD820... at the lower end of the gain spectrum, they sounded IDENTICAL.

Do you use the volume and tone controls of your guitar to go from cleanish to overdriven to heavily overdriven tones within the course of a single song?
If you're that kind of player, then the Klon might be just what you've been searching for. It was for me.
I read up on all of the Klon clones before getting my first PCE Aluminum Falcon 1. It got uniformly rave reviews on all of the forums as did the JHS and a couple of others.
They're handbuilt and worth every penny
I wouldn't build one - I'd buy a used one on Ebay for $200 or so.
The Klon clones I now use have become so important to my playing that I place the same value on them as I do a nice guitar or a nice amp.
And like I said, if Jeff Beck has stopped using his other overdrive pedals and switched to a Klon you know it's good.

That might be why you didn't bond with the Klon right there: you might be a player who wants more "gain on tap". The Klon has more gain than I need - but it won't sound like a Big Muff or even a Fuzz Face.
I think of it as being a Clean Boost/Overdrive...although it will overdrive my amps into more distortion than I'd ever use.

That's cool but not at all the kind of tone I use my Klon to get. I don't sound anything like that.
I set my Klon clone up so I can use my volume control on my Strat or Tele to go from clean/semi-clean to crunchy to lightly overdriven to very overdriven.
It's that quality of being able to go from semi-clean to very overdriven with just my guitar's volume control and the way I pick (whether with an actual pick or with my thumb and fingers) that sets the Klon apart from the other high quality overdrive/distortion units I've owned.
I can make my black face Fenders sound like everything from 50's tweed Deluxes to 60's Marshalls. Not exact of course - but I can get the feeling of those amps.

tayda electronics is king when it comes to ordering parts. Best prices on enclosures and pretty much also best for caps and resistors.
Switches I get on ebay, same for jacks.
Shipping takes long to my neck of the woods (approx. 1 month) but it's well worth it.

Both are great but smallbear is getting ridiculously expensive when it comes to shipping and their prices are quite higher than tayda for pretty much everything (and by a huge factor most of the times).
I'm betting you'll do like myself and not look back once you start buying there. watch their facebook page too, they give coupons for 15% off about twice a month.
