KLON Centaur - comments on this pedal...

Re: KLON Centaur - comments on this pedal...

I want one. Haven't played one but everytime I've heard one I was impressed.

How long have you had yours and what do you think?

I just ordered one, so it will be up tp 10 weeks until it arrives. I'm hoping it does what it claims - to maintain the original sound of the guitar and amp and just make that sound bigger and 3 dimensional-like. In my lead playing, many times I play 2 notes at the same time and with my current TS 808, I loose the sound of each note. This is not a problem when I plugged straight into the Victorilux. I'm hoping I can have just a hint of dirt but distincly hear both notes with the KLON. Do you think the KLON will do this?

I've owned mine for 6 years, and no matter what other OD pedal I buy, the Klon is still the king. Bill Finnegan only makes one pedal, and he somehow hit the nail on the head, which is why he covers the circuit in black glue to keep everyone from reverse engineering it.

The sound is like a richer and more robust version of your amp, which has a nice bouncy tube feel under your fingers. At 9:00, it's a nice rich clean boost. At 11:00, it starts to sound like a tube amp breaking into smooth OD.
At 1:00 it's a nice smooth OD, which is sort of like a Dumble or Two Rock.
It's not a crunchy or harsh sounding pedal. It just melts into the sound of your amp and feels like you just took your amp's volume and gain knobs and set them on the floor in front of you.

The TS-808 has a mixture of clean and distortion and a high-mid hump.
The Klon has a gradual increase in gain that sounds like natural amp gain, and if it adds mids, they're balanced with nice lows and creamy highs.....there's not an exaggerated frequency.

I'm curious.....I'm assuming you ordered a new silver one. How much was the total price? I see that some silver ones go for more than face value, just because people are willing to pay more to avoid the long wait. The gold ones are fetching SILLY money on Ebay right now. The highest I've seen was $767 for a gold one w/Centaur logo.

Thank you Gearjoneser for this review - you described quite nicely (nice tone adjectives which is hard to do, my favorite is "creamy") what I'm hoping I get from this pedal. I can't wait till it arrives. I love the overdriven sound (with a little dirt), but I do not like losing the distinct notes themeselves. It seems like with must OD pedals you quickly lose note clarity when you play more than one note at a time. Agree?

Listen to Warren Hayes and Tak Matsumoto. Both use Klons for their creamy tones.

JOE, how does it compare to the OCD or FD2?

I can tell you from talking to Joe about the Klon that it is completely different from both the OCD and the FDII...the FDII is like the best of the best, hopped up Tubescreamer while the OCD has a good bit of gain on tap and it made more for real crunch tones...

Re: KLON Centaur - comments on this pedal...

Dang you guys, I don't even have my OCD in hand yet and I'm gassing for a Klon now!

Re: KLON Centaur - comments on this pedal...

Spend some time reading the harmony-central reviews of it, but keep in mind it's the top dog at what it does, so there's a few reviews in there by detractors trying to knock the rating down. The rave reviews are the most truthful ones.

One pedal that comes close for $200 is the Banzai Coldfusion. The Klon is still a little better, and I've owned both side by side before, but the Coldfusion is a pretty nice OD too.
