Klon Or Tim?

I need a boost/overdrive and I think it's going to be one of these two. I wonder: has anyone around here has had the opportunity to extensively use both pedals?
Thanks,

Re: Klon Or Tim?

I hear that the Pro Analog Dual Drive bests the Klon, so you might want to check that out. I haven't tried the TIM, even though I only live a couple miles away from the guy. :laugh2:

Re: Klon Or Tim?

I have a TIM.

Great pedal, totally transparent and when you add gain it sounds like your guitar sound with gain. Cool concept huh? :D

The TIM is a two channel box with much more gain than the Klon (which is a one channel box).

I set the TIM so that the 1st channel is just a bit of growl, a tiny bit of clean "push". Kind of Stones-y. The 2nd channel I set for more of an AC/DC-ish Marshally kind of thing.

Keep in mind the TIM is NOT a high gain box. Less than a Fulldrive for sure, but much more than the Klon. And it's much cheaper than both.

:D

Re: Klon Or Tim?

Cool! Mac, does the Tim have separate controls for gain/drive on each channel?

Re: Klon Or Tim?

They're both amazing pedals!
I'm a Fulltone guy, but I really like the Klon. I don't turn my OD above 1/2, because I use my amp's gain to achieve full distortion.

Are you planning on using the OD as part of your tone (like I do), or just for solo boosts?

Re: Klon Or Tim?

I can't comment on the Tim, since I've never tried it, but I stopped searching for OD pedals after getting a Klon Centaur (Gold). I think there's no difference between the silver or gold, although Klon really cheapened the look by not anodizing the case w/centaur logo. They cost a lot, but he hit the nail on the head with his design, as you can see by the hundreds and hundreds of glowing reviews by guys who've had everything. The truth about overdrive pedals is 'there's no BEST overdrive pedal'.
Just like pickups, strings, amps, and guitar wood, it's just another variable in the chain.
The way to really know what works is to audition many OD pedals with your rig, then stick with the one that delivers the tone you want. That may mean buying a bunch of them, used, then re-selling the ones that didn't do it. I did that for a couple years, and went through a bunch, then realized the Klon has a reputation for a reason.
It's in the top 5 of the best OD's ever made because it doesn't diminish or match the tone of the amp....it actually improves it.

Re: Klon Or Tim?

Hey everyone, thank you for your responses, they are all great.
I intend on using the OD pedals often for both rhythm and lead, as well as the boost. I currently run a TS-9, modded by A. Mike, which I like. However, I would like a number of fuzz and od's for tonal character. My amp is a tweed deluxe copy which has a kick azz overdrive, but I would like some additional textures.
I'm not super into high gain, unless it's like a fuzz or something.  Well, it's okay I guess....Thanks again people!

Re: Klon Or Tim?

Another company to consider is www.banzaieffects.com The Coldfusion is a toothier version of a Klon and sounds big and fat. The Fireball is a toothier version of a Fulltone FDII and has more tweakability. You may really like the Fireball. Banzai's sell for $200.

Re: Klon Or Tim?

Pro Analog Dual Drive... best pedal I've ever used. I will be happy to post clips to show it's transparency. This thing absolutely kicks!

Re: Klon Or Tim?

If you like the tone of your guitar and amp and want to add just a bit "more", then the Klon is for you. It is expensive, but will be the last clean boost OD you ever buy. It works well with nearly every amp and guitar.

Yes it does. But it's not nearly as straight forward as that.

All four knobs on the top affect both channels. Gain, bass, treble and volume.

Then there's the channel two gain and "tone" controls which are on the "side" or "front" of the pedal.

The gain has a push pull switch that engages a more compressed sound.

In "non-compressed mode" the "2nd gain" knob more acts as a volume control without adding much more distortion. almost like cranking up a power amp section. Crank it all the way and you get crunch. But you get much LOUDER than the other channel. VERY "clean" Marshally. The "tone" control sounds like it adds bass and treble. I know that sort of sounds weird. But it does. :laugh2:

Pull the 2nd gain pot "out" and the compression kicks in allowing you to crank up the distortion in the 2nd channel more than the 1st one without really getting louder.

Very very flexible. And there is an effect loop in the pedal. What you can do with that is have an effect that is only on when the pedal is on (if you turn the TIM off, the looped effect goes off with it). Pretty cool and original design.

I have never tried a Klon and have heard that they are wonderful. But the Tim is THE most transparent OD I have ever tried. But sometimes you may not want that.

I still LOVE my Custom Shop Cream Fulldrive 2. That has a certain midrange boost that sings and is amazing. Makes single notes sound fat and beautiful. The TIM is a different animal. Totally. And they are only $150 brand new. There is like a six month wait though. You can usually score one on eBay for between $200 & $225.

Oh, and I had a Barber Direct Drive SS. Just sold it on eBay. It is an AMAZING pedal if you want a Marshall in a box. The thing that I didn't like personally is that there is a bit of a dip in the mids to get that Marshall crunch. And you cannot dial it out. Not a lot mind you, but noticable to me. Awesome pedal though and highly recommended if you want a high gain Marshall in a box pedal. The best I've heard. Top notch construction, true bypass, great price.

:D

Re: Klon Or Tim?

Thanks, Mac...I have the regular DD and I love it for the mid-boost thing. I don't know if the SS has that. My rig is sort of mid-challenged so I find that I like pedals with mo' mids.

The Tim sounds great.
