Gibson made him a custom Les Paul '59, which he was using at the time.

not true...Gibson did not make him an LP until the tour for Money for nothing...on the record he borrowed a real late 50's flame top from the king of tone...Billy F Gibbons!

REALLY? I know Knopfler called the Rev. Willie G. to inquire how he optained
his Tone? The Rev. was very tight lipped about it. So Knopfler just dialed
up his own ZZ tone. I'm not saying it's not true :) I just never heard that one.

Re: Knopfler

I didn't hear there was any Billy G involvement. I thought it was an old 58 LP that Mark actually owned.

That's what I heard too. He also used a wah, ****ed back a bit to add to the tone.

Re: Knopfler

Knopfler also played Money for Nothing with the pick-ups parallel and probably out of phase. He was inspired with Peter Green's pick-up config.

Re: Knopfler

I have got a convincing "money for nothing tone with a strat in the Bridge and middle position (I reffer to this as 2nd position) and using the tone knob. Got to use the tone knob. That is the key.

Re: Knopfler

I truly love this guys skill, tone and prose. I tried to record one of his tunes and just deleted it in disgust. I'd have to sell my soul to get skill anywhere near that dude.

He is a master toneninja.

Re: Knopfler

the guitar held together man - dont be so hard
