Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

I am getting my neck in from USACG soon for my guitar build, and I want to go with tuning keys that have a vintage look, a la

But I hate, hate, hate tuners that have slots, as opposed to eyelets.

Does anyone know of a tuning key that has the vintage look, but an eyelet as opposed to a slot for the string?

Honestly, I would really like to put a set of Gibson style tuners like this on it, but I don't know if a 3+3 set on a 6-inline headstock will work - there looks like there would not be enough room to fit all 6 of them, because of the size of the base on the G-style tuners.. I'm OK with half of them turning a different direction than the others, but I am not sure about the dimensions.

The neck is already drilled for standard Fender style tuners.

It is a reverse-headstock neck, so the tuning keys will be located on the treble side.

Anybody have some help to offer?

Thanks!

Re: Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

If the neck comes with the vintage kluson style tuners like the Fender neck in the picture, then I would highly recommend the gotoh vintage tuners. You can get various combinations of locking, height adjustable, and rock solid (stops the shaft from wobbling). From a distance they look vintage on the front, from the rear they look like the klusons even up close. The locking models have the eyelet holes as opposed to slots as well. As a bonus they should fit that Fender neck pictured with no modification (i.e. they have the smaller vintage diameter shaft). I have the locking, height adjustable, "rocksolid" version in chrome and they look perfect on the guitar, and work very nicely. I got rid of a string stree, adjusted the break angle for the strings, and the guitar stays in tune better. They are usually expensive, but are worth it. (lefties even more so, because they are harder to find).

It looks like a cool build. your doing a great job as well. Would you consider a Sperzel locking tuner?

I have them on a couple of my Strats & from the front they look pretty vintage, but they operate differently

Take a look at the GFS site. They have some Wilkinson tuners that are pretty good.
I've used a few sets in builds that I've done.

Absolutely correct!!

Re: Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

Sperzel make a number of vintage-type knobs for their locking and normal tuners. You can get pearloid keystone ones and all kinds of colors. I also think the body and overall look of Sperzels are more classy/classic than other brands.

Re: Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

Details are in the "instructions" tab on the Stew-Mac site. Apparently when you turn the tuner button the locking mechanism clamps the string automatically.

Re: Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

Those are the tuners I mentioned above. Sanford is correct. You just stick the string through the eyelet, then turn the tuner like you are going to tune the guitar and it will lock automatically. To unlock you just get a coin and twist the opposite direction. It makes string changes really easy! They are great!

Thanks a lot!

I am really trying to stay with a vintage look for this build. It's not a vintagey looking guitar, but for some reason, I think modern looking tuners would look wrong on it.

Some of that stuff looks good - I didn't see anything that fully "rang my bell," but it's good to know.

I was looking for more of the ugly green Gibson-style tuners

That seems like pretty much the thread-solver, except I still haven't figured out if I need to find left-handers or not.

Thanks, TC!

yes you do! the direction you turn the tuner is backwards LH vs RH, so the thread on the locking tuner needs to be reversed too.

i bought a set of RH ones for a lefty guitar, and they are useless...

Hey man!

I'm not sure I understand - could you describe it in a little more detail?

If it's just going to be an inconveniece / weird idiosyncrasy, I'm OK with that (e.g. the tuning keys turn "backwards" but still get the job done), but if they are actually useless, then I would love to understand / know why!

Thank you!

I pretty much solved this with my post in your other thread a week or three ago.

Didn't you see it?

Re: Know of any tuning keys with a vintage look, but modern features?

Yes, you need left-handed tuners for a left-handed guitar (or reverse headstock). The right-handed tuners will be upside down (gear-wise) and may not line up with you holes.

Ah, I see it now ---

The only time you'd have to worry is with asymmetrical, sealed designs where the shaft and housing are one piece, like these:

TK-0925-002-2T.jpg

What you're seeing here is a right-handed orientation. Flipping them around for a left-handed orientation would make them upside-down, essentially. Functionally, your turning action would remain intuitive (in a lefty-loosey, righty-tighty sense) but the shaft would emerge from the back of the headstock relatively "underneath" the post, rather than the traditional "above" the post situation.

And that would be lame. It would look like:

Headstock_front.JPG

Yuck. And trust me, it looks even dumber from behind.

This is what you want it to look like:

nitehed.jpg

Notice how the shaft is further "north" than the peg?

A better choice would be to go for a design where the shaft is comprised of a bushing that could be removed with the tuning button and reversed to the other side, like a Sperzel:

Sperzel_Trim-Lok_Guitar_Machines_Detail2.jpg

Otherwise, you'd need to actually get left-handed (or left-SIDED) tuners to have it not look like a hack job.

So it looks like left-handers it is!

I had not considered the whole "it'll be on the wrong side of the housing and hard to reach" deal.

Spank you - very much.
