Korina McCarty?

Does anyone have experience with one? I love McCarty's, but have never tried one in korina so I am unfamiliar with the tonal spectrum of that wood. Got my eye on one for a great price but won't be able to try it before hand.

Re: Korina McCarty?

As far as I know, limba is similar to mahogany but a bit more open and lively, with a bit more high end.

Re: Korina McCarty?

Well, it looks like I just made a killer deal on one on TGP so I will know soon enough myself.

Here's a couple of pictures:

Re: Korina McCarty?

That looks SWEET! My first venture in to the limba world was with my PRS SE Singlecut Korina. It's absolutely killer. It has that nice full sound of mahogany, but with a little more snap to it. What you have there is white limba which is a heck of a lot nicer looking with transparent finishes than black limba (though some places still call it black korina). Full report when you get it.

Re: Korina McCarty?

I don't know, I often like the mineral streaking of black limba... but I like spalted maple in certain applications too. That said, white limba is one of my favorite woods in a "natural" finish.

Re: Korina McCarty?

You've been grabbin up some killer guitars lately. I'm hoping your hard work resulted in a treat this year.

I have no doubt you'll love that McCarty. It's not just the wood and pickups, it's also the solid design. My McCartys sound fatter than some of my Gibsons.

Good mint crop this year? Killer looking axe. You have definitely been on a roll lately!

Thanks Joe it's been a good couple of years all around. Like yourself, it's taken a while to get to where I am at with the gear and lots of hard work. I got great deals on both of the new guitars and I hope that this PRS is as nice as the Strat(which really is beyond phenomenal).

Re: Korina McCarty?

Lucky boy. I really wanted a natural Korina McCarty but they discontinued them and never shipped any to the UK. For some reason we only got 70's burst ones. But they are IMO the best McCarty guitar PRS ever built.

Re: Korina McCarty?

Good stuff man...that and the Strat!

Limba is a great wood and FWIW, real limba guitars are among the best sounding electric guitars I've ever played!

I currently own quite a few electric guitars and have bought and sold even more and my Moderne is still one of the best if not the best sounding electric guitar I've ever owned...limba is a great tone wood.

As for the tone I always tell people this...it's 80-85% mahogany and 15-205 swamp ash.

It is closest to mahogany and it has that big warm chunky mahogany sound but right on the top end it has a bright articulate top end with a lot of air aroudn the notes like a good piece of swamp ash.

Enjoy that bad boy!

Re: Korina McCarty?

Since we're on the subject of limba here, I've been curious how a limba Strat would sound with a chunky maple neck and rosewood fretboard. Anybody have any experience there? Naturally it would have to be custom made as there are no limba bodied Strats out there that I know of.

Re: Korina McCarty?

I'm thinking about a custom superstrat neck-thru with a 5pc neck (3maple/2limba), ebony fretboard and limba body sides but it's still waaaay to early to talk about how it will sound.:P

It's gonna be interesting though.

I've listened to many clips and videos of limba guitars and I liked them a lot.

Re: Korina McCarty?

She just came in and it's exceeded my expectations so far. The neck is amazing. Split tones are ok, but my CS strat smokes it in that respect. HB tones are pretty good, but they could be better. And man she's a looker! The pictures don't do it justice. After some new strings and playing with the pup height it's sounding better than before. The McCarty pups are somewhat vintage, but I will always prefer real vintage PAF tones ala Antiquity, WCR Godwood or Fillmore's.

Re: Korina McCarty?

Korina looks killer. I like the tone of the wood. IMO korina is to mahogany as ash is to alder - very similar but with a little more upper mids and a little more snap.

The only problem with great PAF's is that you lose the splitting feature on the tone knob. My first thought when seeing that guitar is nickel PG set in 4 lead.
