Lace Sensor - Ambitious Rewind

I like buying broken pickups- on the chance they were only 'broken' by user error. So far a 75% ratio of success based on careful selection/observation of auctions and such. This ancient Gold Fender Lace Sensor reads ~2 ohms, so has a short of some kind in the coil. I figured the coil would be embalmed in epoxy, but turns out the cover is just double-side taped on:

Further, you can observe the coil itself lifts (with some effort) right out of the rubber magnet coffin surrounding it:

The coil itself is taped, and it *appears* someone might have been in it before me, based on that wavy wind...

I've re-attached/repaired broken sections of coil on other pickups; if I'm lucky I hope I can tie together both ends here, and re-tape. If I'm not so fortunate- Anyone able to take a guess what AWG a gold sensor is based on the below info from the Lace website? 43 ?

It's 1:30 AM and I have work tomorrow. To be continued...

with that small a coil and 5.8k, id guess #43 but thats just a guess

Re: Lace Sensor - Ambitious Rewind

I pulled the loose portion of the coil out and scraped the insulation off the middle portion of it (not seeing any obvious break.) My plan was if there was sufficient resistance on either side of the loose portion, I would cut it and solder that end to the lead lug.

...To bad that didn't work out, because the first side I measured was 2.7k ; so I'd gain a whopping .5k by using that side. The other side measured 2.5k, which obv. doesn't equal the 2.2k full reading. So I have some sort of intermediary short between the two (almost exact) halves of the pickup.

Pretty much looks like a re-wind in that case, since I'm probably going to have no luck tracking down the short. On that note:

  • I think I agree with Jeremy and will order some 43 AWG. Anyone confirm or deny a Gold Lace uses that?
  • Does anyone off-hand know whether a standard Lace Gold is wound clock-wise or counter? I'll try to make a good guess when I rip the coil off, but might not be able to
  • I've never wound a pickup before- so I guess I'll be reading up; a tiny freaking Lace coil probably isn't a terrible place to start

Pickup math:

2.7 one side...

2.5 opposite

Equals 2.2 total

Re: Lace Sensor - Ambitious Rewind

So I've got a spool of wire, and awww here it goes.

Again my first time. Plan of attack is: Rip out the existing coil, measure the average of a few winds around the bobbin with the new wire & do some math to figure how many more winds I need to get to ~5.8 - 6k DCR (or use a calculator!) , wind counterclockwise (based on white being ground) using either my hands or figuring out a sewing machine, then trying not to break even more coils installing it back in the magnet cradle & sealing it up. Apparently Lace didn't pot until recently, so maybe I won't either.
