Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I'm an advocate for SD alternative 8's and Custom 8's. But mastodon has really brought my attention to Lace over the years and Ive been thinking about putting a set in one of my SG drop C tuned guitars. Any lace recommendations or thoughts on putting one of Mastodons sig sets in an SG? I'm really looking for an alnico 8 magnet for sure maybe alnico 5. Ive just been sold on Alnico 8 for a while now but Im open to anything

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I've only experience with the older Lace pickups...not my cup of tea but were solid pickups. That being said, I'm very intrigued by the Alumitone offerings...

Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I had a guitar with them in another lifetime. You can probably get good stuff out of them, but they weren't my thing. They sound more like a stacked humbucker than a single coil.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

There's 3 different Mastodon sets and none of them appear to be Alumitone-based, if specs mean anything. They are also quite varied in specs, though no info on magnet type or technology. They appear to be some kind of high gain humbucker, so I wouldn't expect them to sound like single coils or stacked humbuckers either. I think you need to find someone who has their signature guitars with them in them to get a review.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

Alumitones are great... Sensors are kind of dull/plain. Probably best if you're not looking for a single coil tone with your single; they'll quack and glass, but they won't twang or bite much.

Im actually looking for humbuckers. Even the humbuckers seem a little plain. Even the alumitones which I was disappointed about. I guess there really is a true reason why Ive always stuck with duncans

For an SG I'd go with Gibsons or Duncans.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I know a forum bro here has a Epi Brent Hinds V with the Hammer Claws, can't remember who it is.
You might wanna search for his posts and contact him directly.

Somebody had a LTD Kelliher signature LP with the Dissonant Aggressors but sent it back to the shop for build issues with it.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I haven't had a chance to get some, but Lacedissonant aggressors soundawesome, from the demos I've heard.

Deathbuckers are what the name says.

How do yours sound compaired to the videos?

I almost pulled the trigger on these. What would you say they're like compaired to some pups everyone has heard. The only thing that stopped me was that Fluff's video had some sort of high mid spike that resembled ice picky harmonics inside a chord, but I don't always agree with how he EQ's his signal so it might be his rig.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

Don't know about the video you're talking about. My experience with them has been in an Epi Korina Explorer. They are clear, and to my ear, they emphasize the acoustic characteristics of the guitar they're in. Run with sick amounts of gain, they thump, punch and hammer while still maintaining clarity. Nice death metal high end sustain too.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

Looks like Im gonna have to strip my axes of all of their alternative 8's and start trying out all kinds of pickups with the descriptions I'm aiming for. I really appreciate the replies guys for real. I've got some shopping to do

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I'll link you to my review of the Hammer Claws. I like them A LOT! Check out the Dragonauts and Nitro Hemi too. I'll never have a guitar without a set from here on out. Go to page 2, post#22.

Just read that whole thread, including your pickup review. Nice thorough job. One question: if you are playing into a medium-gain amp will they clean up just by lightening picking technique?

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

I wouldn't strip all of them. The Alt8 could certainly have a place in your tone cabinet.

Re: Lace Sensor pickup thoughts?

Yes, they do have a threshold where they won't respond in kind to MUCH lighter attack like a PAF will for example. A little roll off on the volume helps some. But I'm talking about really light stuff where you're just barely breathing on them. They still sound like themselves but are dynamic.
