Hi,
With a strat, just body only, brand new, What would be heavier- Alder, mahogany, ash (not swamp),
basswood, agathist sp? All wood random-standard grade. Heavier to lighter, with guessing on the weight allowed. Always wanted to know. I don't know how to spell aghathist.
Thanks,

Mahogany is typically the heaviest. I've been told the list goes heaviest to lightest mahogany, alder, basswood, ash, agathis. It very much depends on the specific piece though. Also, some species that would be considered mahogany by some well known guitar brands are much lighter than others. There's Honduran Mahogany, African Mahogany, Sapele (considered by some to be mahogany), etc... Honduran mahogany being the most sought after and in the opinion of many aficcianados to be the best sounding breed of mahogany.

Tl;Dr: Mahogany is known to be the heaviest, but it depends on the specific piece and species.

Thanks youngthrasher9,
That is very good to know and I will use this knowledge as my finances are sure to improve!

Northern Ash is very heavy,ie the 70's boat anchors.

Had one, even after routing for HBs & a Floyd still was way too heavy...

YMMV,of course.

Almost built a body out of Mexican Ironwood, then I woke up. Though I still flirt with the idea one in a while.

*snort* :) The sustain would be extraordinary, but I wouldn't want to do the build or carry it.

It'd ruin my tools and weigh a freaking ton. Also, IIRC, it doesn't glue easily, so it wouldn't work in an Alembic style sandwich.

Ash, mahogany, alder, basswood, Agathis... Remember the OP isn't talking about swamp ash. Northern ash is darn heavy in general.

Your results may vary.... Wood is unpredictable.

Perfect excuse for a semi-hollow!

I made a body out of oak. It is heavy but very nice. The whole guitar weighs about 10 pounds.
