wanted to ask a few questions about laney amps, this LC15R i have, in particular..

in the manual, it says...

HI input- generally for guitars with low output pups..less bass than low input..using a high output pup in this input may drive the preamp too severly, resulting in a mushed output..

Lo input- for high output pups..more bassier sounding than the hi input...tighter sounding..

if you guys have this feature in your laney amps...which input do you use and why?

bright channel: do you use this or not? and why?

and im able to hook this up to a 4x12 cab..about how much louder will it get?

oh and i think im going deaf...it seems im cranking the darn baby more and more each time..i can't get enough of this thing :D

Hi Benji!
I've been a regular user of a LC-15 for over six years, in rehearsals and live. As for the lo/hi inputs, I generally use the lo input for guitars with humbuckers and the hi input for guitars with single coils. When I take say a STrat and my Hawk to a gig, I want balanced volume without much knob twiddling, and it seems to work fine.

As for the Bright switch, I never use it. It makes guitars with single coils painfully bright to my ear, and for guitars with humbuckers, the tone controls give me enough range to get the tone I want.

As for connecting the baby to a 4x12, I've never done it but my amp tech has, and he says the amp can rage quite loudly. He always tries this after re-tubing (he's a custom amp builder too).

And concerning loudness ... I seldom crank the volume past 5 - I don't like the cranked tone. It's too harsh to my ears and the amp gets really hot. I did two or three shows where the soundman didn't have channels enough on his mixer so I played straight to the venue, no PA. I was afraid I could harm the thing but it has withstood all my abuse (so far anyway).

Have you tried any effects connected in the FX loop of your LC-15R? I consider buying the LC-15R and getting two alternative rigs: one would be my tried-and-true LC-15 with just a guitar and cable, straight to the amp, or perhaps with the Tech21 SansAmp TRI-A.C. in the front, and the other would be the LC-15R with some OD and fuzz pedals in the front and a phaser, delay and what not in the loop.

The thing is, I like certain order of pedals in the chain that works for me. I usually run my guitar to Zoom Ultra Fuzz to Guyatone Tremolo to Guyatone Wah Rocker to OD pedals and then to the amp. Of course, the more pedals in front, the worse for your tone. But the Zoom, and especially the Trem-to-Wah Rocker combination only work the way I like if in front of an amp. If ever I buy that second amp, I will have to try all that stuff beforehand.

Hope this still makes sense.
Enjoy your amp and get back with tone news!
Tony

Re: LANEY amps!

thanks for your detailed reply, Tony :)

i mostly use the lo-input because otherwise, my JB will drive the preamp too hard..

i never use the bright switch with the hi input..its too ice picky...but the bright channel on the lo-input makes for some shining, sparkling cleans...tho i only use it for clean stuff

pedals in the fx loop...i'll try my dd-5 delay in there :)

hmm...i liked the cranked tone of this thing..good news is that the amp doesn't get hot either, even when i use it for a long time..it just stays mildly warm..

since your laney LC15's 6+ years old..laney's has changed some things...for example..my LC15R came with celestions(when a few years ago, they would have come with hh invaders..)

i really wanna hook this thing up to a 4x12 cab..

Re: LANEY amps!

Hi Benji,
sorry I went to bed in the meantime, and now you're in bed probably whereas I'm starting to work.

Anyway, you're true in that your amp may be modified for the better. Mine gets really hot even when running the volume at 3-4 (my usual gig volume). My tech looked at it, repaired like two cold solder joints (I had been playing the thing with the cold joints for like 3 years without a problem!) and said, what a fine little amp. Many users at Harmony Central find the amp cheap in workmanship, but I must have been lucky - no problems. I have it regularly retubed, like once a year.

When I was browsing some new LC-15Rs I noticed they came with Celestions. Mine has the HH Invader in it. The Celestion is definitely one more thing why I consider getting a new LC-15R.
