Laney AOR series

Anyone got one? Can't find very much info. They seem to go for about £300 and are often compared to the JCM800.

Any good for Nirvana/Alice in Chains/RHCP perhaps?

Cheers

Re: Laney AOR series

I read up on them recently.

A common misconception is that it's a JCM800 clone. It's not. It's a super hotrodded plexi, basically. Rumor has it the Laney AOR is what Tony Iommi used before Laney made him a signature amp. I plan on pickin one up eventually, to try out. That probably won't be until a few years from now, though. I bet you could get into AIC territory pretty easily if you put a boost up front.

I have the series 1 100 watt and love it. Its an extremely high gain but classic brittish sounding amp. Gets you that low-mids guttural roar. Very flexible though, can do JCM800 stuff with the AOR section disengaged and the push-pull tone knobs pushed in.

Liz Buckingham (Electric Wizard) uses one . . . and she gets a great sludge tone from it !

Re: Laney AOR series

I have owned several. still have a AOR 50. I like the 6 knob heads better than the 8 knob. In general, swapping the bright cap and resistor off the input jacks, to lower values, and tossing a .68 cap on the presence pot instead of the .1, make for a great sounding amp. I find em too bright stock, add some warmth and lower mid grunt and they are killer. They are finicky about pre amp tubes, usually responding better to warmer sounding, lower gain tubes. A 12At7 in the mix can be very nice.

Re: Laney AOR series

They sound like a big wet bag of farts. Fizzy razor thin treble, murky midrange and farty bass response. If you don't like the way it sounds wait 15 minutes because it will change into something you like even less.

Well, what ISNT a super hot rodded plexi?

A jcm 800 is; a 5150 is; many mesas are; and the SLO is *literally* a super lead overdrive, as in 1959 super lead aka "plexi"

Re: Laney AOR series

I have the first gen of the AOR Pro Tube 100 watt head (6 knob version, no gain boost). I also used to own a real 1983 JCM800 2204. While they are very, very similar......they are different. Definitely in the same ball park for sure as a JCM800 and a modded plexi

The Sword uses em too. Big and brawny sounding. It'd be what I'd want to get if I didn't want a Hovercraft.

That is so sad about the 5150 rep as a one-trick-metal-pony :(

My 90's era 5150 was made for Hard Rock, and excels (believe it or not) at Classic Rock Tones too.
The 5150 that i have keep on to amaze me the longer i have it.
And the 55Hz Greenbacks sounds sooo good with this amp !!!

:D

You decide. 2:00-3:00, 'Tusker' and 'Rhodes'.

BTW as for comparison, 3:50-4:50 'Sanxion' JCM800 and JCM900.

It can do what a JCM800 with some tweaking but it doesn't has that kind of edge. The JCM800 feels to be a razor, the AOR feels to be some weepon that has mass, a club or morning star. It is smooth but the top can be a little buzzy unless you start to find the sweet spots. Because of the gain structure and active EQs, maybe finding it is a little more time consuming than usual. But it is good stuff. So damn loud. It accepts boosters and preamps pretty well.

The most important difference to me was reliability. It was built ridiculously well. I had mine for 10 years or so, bumping around during the time. No sign of problems. Both my younger JCM800 and 900 amps had a habit of visiting the doc on a regular base.

An AOR is good for your spleen I guess, especially if you can score it under $200.
