Can some of you guys give me some info on the Laney AOR tube heads? I picked one up super cheap ($100 after I sold the cab) and just figured I would use it for my stereo rig until I find a deal on another 100 watt Marshall head.

I don't know sqaut about these amps. It has 2 Fender branded Sovtek 5881's in it. I am familiar with EL34's and 6L6's but not these. Where do these tubes fall in between the EL's and 6'L6's? Can I put EL-34's in it? If so, what will I have to change? Will the amp need any mods or other work or will it be a direct replacement.

The amps doesn't sound bad, especially through a 4x12 1960A with G12T75 x V30's, but it doesn't sound near as good as my DSL. As a stand alone amp, I don't really like it at all. The amp has a 6L6 flavor to it and it just isn't my sound.

If it's not too expensive or labor intensive (which is expensive because I don't do amp work) I may try it with some EL34's, if possible.

Very cool! They aren't as costly as Marshalls, but that's just a STEAL!

Very similiar to Marshalls with the same features. Not quite as heavy in the transformer department in the modern ones and a few other cheaper components to arrive at the price point.

5881s are a type of 6L6. They were originally a military upgrade 6L6. They have a little different tone. You need to email laney to ask if the amp is set up to run 34s. The EL34 has a different pinout than a 6L6. It's not a huge deal and can be converted with little effort, but it MUST be done. After that you have to rebias because 34s run hotter than 6L6s.

Now you know why it has that flavor!

Like I said it shouldn't be too expensive. I'd like to think 100 bucks should cover tubes and the mods unless you have tech that like to stick it to you.

Cool info, Thanks. Is there any way I can tell what year model it is? The serial number is a handwritten 1298.

I've googled everything I can and without pulling the chassis, it looks from the numbers it is a late 86 to early 87 model.

I had a Laney AOR 50 when I was in highschool. I bought it because Iommi endorsed them. It was built like a tank and had plenty of features, but I never liked its basic tone. I was never satisfied with it. The god **** thing warbled at all volumes, eq settings and gain levels. I was expecting a super tight, agressive, muscular British sound, but what I got was a bag of farts!

I have the same amp...serial #1154. It's an 8 knob Pro Tube 50 with pull boosts on all the tone knobs and a switchable gain boost for the high input, right? It also has an effects loop. Mine has EL34's in it. It sounded terrible until I recapped the power supply. I haven't started to "play" with it yet,

The easiest way to approximate a date on these amps is to look at the LCR capacitor cans on the top of the chassis. There should be two 50uFx2@500v and two 50uFx2@350v cans. The caps, starting at the end closest to the chassis will say "LCR" with the terminal designations underneath. Underneath that it will say "UK", and below that will be a date code. The first two numbers are the year, then a dash, then the week of manufacture.

example: 83-38 would be the 38th week of 1983

the dude in High on Fire and dudes from the Sword recorded awesome albums with Laney AORs.

Seems like a cool tone but yours has been tweaked to accept 6L6's...get the EL34's in there and get it biassed properly and i bet you'll like it more than yoru DSL...
