Lap Steel Guitar - questions

Hi guys !
I bought recently a lap steel guitar for 20$ with case and shipping free.
Guy didn't even know what kind of guitar he is selling.
It was made in 1964 in Moscow in Russia by Fabrika Muzikalnykh Instrumentov (The Factory of Music Instruments).
It's in mint condition (even not single scratch !) with every part original and working.
The guitar is working perfectly except the tuners.
It is my first lap steel guitar, so I'm trying to learn to play anything.

What string gauge should I use for Open E tuning?
Would love to see any video-lessons, anybody know anything except YT ?

Re: Lap Steel Guitar - questions

for something like that, id go heavy with a wound G

im sure some company makes a set specifically for open E on a lapsteel. if not i might get a custom set 14/19/wound 23/38/48/56

That is an awesome find! You should be very happy!

Jeremy you like wound G's? On my laps I prefer a plain G, albeit thick like a 20 or 21. The 23 wound will actually have less tension since the core is smaller.

Anyway I like the tone of the plain G and wound G's sound a bit to "zingy" and "zippery" to me under the slide.

Amazing carpet.

On first sight, I mistook the brightly coloured areas for heaps of party powders.

Re: Lap Steel Guitar - questions

I use 13,17,21,26 plain and 36,46 wound. It keeps the bottom end from being boomy. Open E with a 25" scale.
