are these part of the famous japanese quality fenders? or are these nothing special? im not talking about early 80s squires. i have a good offer on a 87 MIJ strat and im wondering if i should bite.

E Series was 84 - 87 IIRC...I have an E Strat and Tele and both are wonderful guitars which are at least the equal of their American counterparts.

MIJ Fenders are very nice guitars. The worst part of them is the electronics can be a little weak (the pots and switch). The necks are great!!

i always thought that fender japan uses american fender electronics. I've got a newer CIJ and it's really nice. i feel pretty spoiled, especially compared to most MIM and some MIA fenders.

Re: late 80s MIJ fender strats

I have an 'E' Series Fender Jap Strat that I got for £200 and it's a great guitar. I actually prefer playing it over my 93' USA Strat.

I don't think Fender Japan has had any bad eras really, despite having switched factories a few times... Most of their axes have had improvements over time with respect to body woods/hardware and electronics.

I think most Jap Fenders now use US pickups at least, I know Jags and JMs don't though :P

Yeah, I got mine for about that - it's weird that the E Series Teles command far higher prices than the Strats. Lately, E Series Teles are going for way more than a used MIA Tele, but you can still get the Strats for a couple of hundred quid every now and again...

Can be great guitars... I have an '86 Tokai 62 that hangs there with the EJ acoustically, has a great vibe. 22 years of playing time helps...

That was a good buy. I've got a E series squier that I paid £100 for with a case and its stella, just needed a set of duncans. Wish I could find another for the same money.

I'd say give it a whirl if the price is good and if you don't like it sell it to me!
