It depends on the store, and the brand as well. I know Planet Waves' policy is that you don't need a receipt, but some stores try to ignore that and still ask for it. I've never had to actually send them a cable due to the store refusing to exchange it yet (1 Classic Series and 2 Custom Series that were about 10 or so years old. The American Stage I have is relatively new and I bet I won't have to exchange that until 2025 or later).
