Layla, Champs, Princetons & tubes

So it seems that Duane Allman played a Princeton Reverb on "Layla" and even if it were a "Silverface", in 1970 it hadn't changed (much) from the Blackface P.R.

I've always heard that Eric Clapton played a Champ on that album - Blackface? Tweed? Sure tone is in the fingers/soul, but how did he get all that out of an 8" speaker?

Last question - looking at 1960's Fender schematics there are both 7025 and 12AX7 tubes specified. Current tube-sellers list these as identical tubes. What's the diff, if any?

Thanks for answering this trivia for me.

I was always under the impression that the Champ was a Tweed but I can't provide a single reason why or a single smidge of print to prove it.

Nah, there were blackface and silverface champs too. I personally don't want an amp that has the limitations that those did. I'd rather have a tweed deluxe, at least you get a volume control and a little head room.

I would also take a blackface princeton reverb.

Been to the Fender Amp Field Guide & have a very basic understanding of the different Champ (and Princeton) circuits. I don't expect much volume or clean headroom out of an amp rated at 6 watts pushing a 6" speaker. Clapton sure knew how to make it sing though.

My question is did Clapton play a Tweed, Blackface or Silverface Champ on "Layla"? Like Scarey, I had assumed it was a Tweed 5E1, but the Princeton discussion got me wondering...

I've always assumed Clapton used a tweed Champ on Layla? The only one still around to confirm this would be Eric himself. I Imagine his memory would be pretty fuzzy being 36 years ago and at the height of his drug abuse?

This is the only info I could find.
Upon the arrival of Eric and his band, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon and Bobby Whitlock, Tom recalls, "I couldn't believe my eyes when the equipment came into the studio. The bass amp was an Ampeg piggy back with a single 15" speaker and the guitar amp was a Fender Champ! The alternate guitar amplifier was a Fender Princeton. The last time I had recorded Eric he and Jack Bruce were employing double stacks of Marshall's!"

BTW, 7025 was a military spec. 12AX7. At some point in the 60's all tube manufacturer's started making 12AX7's to 7025 specs. So the Part# became obsolete

Thats actually what I heard as well...now stop all this talk about Princetons!

Re: Layla, Champs, Princetons & tubes

so much for that "I have to have at least 50 watts" argument :D

did someone say "Princeton"?

If we keep "talking" about Princetons, maybe one will fall into Christian's clutches after all... :smokin:

Nah, Princetons all stink, regardless of Tweed, BF or SF, especially those horrible ones with reverb ;)

I believe Clapton used the TV front champ, no negative feedback is one thing that really makes it different then any other champ and to my ears that's what it sounds like.
