Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

I've got an epiphone Les Paul i've been trying to upgrade, but I can't decide on what pickups I'd like to put in it. I play in a classic rock cover band and really dig Jimmy Page's humbucker tone, but the ones Gibson put in the Jimmy Page signature model (They're modified BurstBuckers I believe) aren't available as replacements.

Anyone have recommendations for a good pair of humbuckers?

Depending wholly upon your Epi and amp, a 59b and a PGn. Or the Zang Pagey 2 set, should get you pretty close.

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

He used a DiMarzio Super Distortion for a while in the early 70's. I'd say that in the bridge and Zhangbucker "Pagey 2" for the neck.

Why does everyone think that? In the early 70's Jimmy had a T-Top in the bridge NOT a Super Distortion. If you look it u you will get the same info. In the early 70's many players hated DiMarzio Pickups because you couldn't wax pot them because the would melt.

You don't want those anyway. My buddy has a Jimmy Page LP, and the pickups are way too hot imo. Page played mostly with stock humbuckers and did use a Super Distortion for a bit. Now if you're talking FIRST album or Stairway solo...that's a single coil Telecaster.

Here's a neat site.

I had a 65 or so Gretsch 6150 I believe, and with the amp pinned and using a strat I got oh so close to Pagey's tone. FWIW, a few years back I virtually nailed the Song Remains The Same tone with an Epi LP, Duncan 59 bridge, Dimarzio Super 2 neck through a Crate Blue Voodoo of all amps. The middle position tone was to die for.

I was about to type out almost the exact same thing.
He never used a Dimarzio...ever

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

you can pot old buckers you just need to be very careful with the wax temp

get a pair of 59's and call it a day. they will give you what you need if you have the chops

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

Ideally, I would go for T-Tops. But, I agree that you should just go for the '59s, and be done with it.

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

Page used a Super D? First I've heard of it.

I'd get 59s.

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

I don't know how old you guys are, but I could swear that in the 70s, there was an article in some guitar magazine about Page and a Super D. It wasn't one of his favorites, and maybe it was just an endorsement like the Univox amps? I do remember him being linked to the pickup somewhere along the line, but only for a microsecond. I saw this mag in the very early 80s over a friend's house.

Re: Led Zep knockoff: opinions wanted!

I don't remember ever seeing a photo of Page with a guitar with a Super D's hex poles in it, and none of the stuff he recorded sounds like a Super D either.
A PAF maybe, but not a Super D.
