Les Paul Deluxe??????

Anyone know anything about these? Is $900 a good price for a used one from 1980? It also comes with a case. They have the mini-humbuckers in them; how do these compare to the full size? Is it worth routing out the body and putting full size in?

Thanks

That'd be a Nashville Gibson as opposed to a Kalamazoo Gibson. Nice guitars! I had a '77 Deluxe for a while. One piece mahogany body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard and maple top. $900? Sure, why not? Where else you gonna get a nice Les Paul for $900. If it sings for you and you like the way it plays, $900 is a good price. Lew

The mini humbuckers have less output and clearer, brighter, more hi-fi kind of tone than full sized humbuckers. They're alot like a Firebird pickup.

I'd probably install a set of Antiquity P90's or some other excellant P90's rather than have the holes enlarged for a full size humbucker...they'll fit in the same hole perfectly and sound better than the mini HBs, IMO, and you won't have to rout your guitar for bigger pickups.

But if you've got the tone of a full sized humbucker in your head, then yeah: have it routed for some full sized Duncan Humbuckers.

I have an original 1968 Les Paul Goldtop Deluxe, with the mini humbuckers in it. I like em because they're different from my LP Standard's, with full size humbuckers. The mini's are a nice change of pace every now and then, both visually and tonally.

I'd say it's well worth the $900, and you can certainly have it routed for full size humbuckers, but......you can also save up some more $$ and get a Standard. ( I really hate the thought of routing out that Guitar ) A used Standard will run you somewhere around $1400 to $1600, according to ebay prices.

That's a good price, for sure. You may really like the minis or P90s, so you might not even have to dig holes. It's probably not a bad investment at this stage of the game, either, as the Gibsons from that area seem to be going up in price.
You don't see that many LP Deluxes that still have the minis.

Which is another reason for NOT routing it for full-size HBs. A Deluxe has an identity all of its own - I hate the thought of carving it up to make a Standard. Try to play one with the mini HBs - you might like 'em. I think they look great too.

<---- Wish I'd never sold this one :crying:

I've played a Les Paul Deluxe since I was a kid. Its a 1970 model. I've owned it since it was new.

The neck minihumbucker is a keeper. Excellant tone! Better than any other, IMHO.

The bridge pickup could use some help. Try an Antiquity minihumbucker or Firbird, or one of the SM2, SM3 models to see if they work well for you.

$900 is a good deal. Go for it...

In my '77 Deluxe I replaced the bridge pickup with an original late 50's Gibson paf Seymour rewound for me. But I kept the minihumbucker for the neck pickup. I liked the clear tone of the minibucker but at the same time found it to be a little less soulful than I prefer. Just personal taste. Lew

I have a 1973 Goldtop Deluxe that currently has the mini humbuckewrs in it. Link to picture below. It has unusual pickup surround rings on it which allow me to switch back an forth from the minis to the humbuckers without seeing the routing job. These days, I prefer the sound of the minis - but that may change soon, and then I can easily drop in the Aniquity PAF's

My Deluxe w/minis - also routed for full size

I just love these... I wish I could afford one, they're not easy to find in my area... I wouldn't put fullsize hb in it... I'd by a std...

Hi Lew....

To me, the neck minihumbucker is the proverbial cat's meow. I think its got soulfulness all over it. The mini has more single-coil brightness, while retaining full humbucker depth. Its a screaming blues-soundin' thing to be sure...

But, everyone has different ears...

Cheers!
