Well, I figured this might be an easier way to get a good sample of opnion on my first attempt at trying out a pickup comination.

I am basically looking to remove the stock Gibson PAF '57 Classics out of a Les Paul Standard and replace them with a SD combination. I like the LP/57 combo but I really have nothing to weight it against. Luckily, I have two guitars and will be able to A/B them and experiment.

I am most definitely interested in a non-covered 'zebra' model. The guitar is built to '59 Gibson (Historic/VOS) specs: Maple top and mahogany back, long tenon joint, rosewood board, no weight relief holes, etc.

I use one of two heads, either a JCM 800 or a Laney Pro Tube, through an old Marshall Lead slant cabinet with Weber 30 Watt Greenback clones. I do not use any pedals save for the odd boost.

The music I play is a dirty hard rock with a punk edge and some classic rock flavour to it; think The Hellacopters, Gluecifer, Supersuckers, etc. Those guitar tones are close to the one I have and dig. Here are a few Myspcae pages for reference:

Try the track "Take it" for a sample. The style and sound is where I am going...

If you have time, I would appreciate a vote and any explaination and/or experience you could offer. Thanks everyone. It is much appreciated by this pickup noob. Cheers.

I have to say I'm really digging the Crazy 8 in the bridge of my LP...it really slams the amp and is very articulate.....other than that....the Brobucker is supposed to be Magical.....I've gotta get my hands on one of those.....:D

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

I have read that the '78 and the BroBucker are both mythical creations of sonic heaven; I cannot recall hearing anything negative about them. They certainly are intriguing.

Man, I think you need to check out the Pearly Gates combo for your LP! Sweet, vintage-y but more mids than your typical PAF. What is it that you want to change?? More nuts?

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

I could only put 10 choices down for the poll so I opted to use 'other' for the 10th option.

As I originally posted, I am merely looking for another flavour that will fit with a les Paul and my style of music. Did you check out the clip?

I would like a ballsy, thick n' chewy tone yet try to maintain a smooth full sound. I am not looking for bright and/or brittle.

If your vote does go to the "You missed one" option please let me know what you would have selected as Micah provided. Thanks!

My brother has a set of A2P's in his LP, and it screams Rock N'Roll to me !

Did you vote Aceman?

This is getting interesting. I might have to try a few of these with seemingly a lack of a clear prefered pickup.

Dont forget the Crazy 8.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

I voted custom. It does everything well but I just don't like the lead tone at all.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

alnico 5 = rock'roll to me, classic at about 8k, little more power, to about 10k. depends how you like it I guess. double rows of stud pole pieces is great also, got a swineshead runaway and it's versatile rock'roll at its heart.

i'd go witht he 59 personally.

Be careful. Everyone's tastes are different. Falling into the trap of trying pickups to see what they sound like is expensive and time-consuming. Not meaning to be a buzzkill on the thread, but it may be better to buy one, tweak it a while, see if you like it, and go from there, without planning to try a bunch of other pickups. That is, unless you have a personal tech and a large supply of cash :)

There are just too many choices, you know? Not to mention other brands... it gets a little ridiculous after a while. Don't forget the Phat Cat, which people say sounds like "pure rock n roll." I think the key is to find the tone you want, and get the pickup that will get you the closest. Going off of descriptions can be misleading because tone depends so much more on guitar, amp, etc than pickups.

I would normally suggest the 59 for Rock 'n' Roll, but after hearing that song I would really suggest the Custom for you.
