Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Although I haven't tried it, I would think a Screaming Demon would be awesome in that application.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Which pickup(s) are more similar to the 57 Classics I am used to? It is hard to tell without having them in my complete rig but the APH-1 and the SH-1 sound a little familiar but those **** clips...

Would your recomendation make any difference if I also added that I usually play very, very loud?

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

I suppose I should add that I had previously listened to the samples provided a few weeks back. As I mentioned, allthough they are understandably limited in what I can take from them, I had narrowed it down to 4 models.

So far one of my four, the SH-5, seems to be the favourite. The SH-1 have a few votes and so does the APH-1.

The fourth, which I had dismissed as more suited to a blues style, seems to have a few nods as well. The PG1 sounds appealing on the clips but again I am not sure how much stock I put into those.

I did not add the SH-6 as the mid/top end sounded rather brittle compared to the others.

I had listened to the SH-14 but the recording was done differently and/or at a different time and/or under different conditions. Again, this just added to my skepticism about the demo clips. As is, the sound on the clip is not appealing at all.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

I do not find the JB as smooth as the other choices I mentioned; it seems a little more harsh.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

The 'hybrid' thread has made me even more torn on what to try. They seem to get stellar reviews.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

As mentioned previously, if you choose other, please advice on which type you would have included. Otherwise, the vote is of little use.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Don't forget the Phat Cat. I've had the bridge version in my LP for a couple of days now, and it compliments the full tone of an LP very well. Plus it rawks!

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Don't forget the Phat Cat, which people say sounds like "pure rock n roll."

Hmm sounds like I may be a little too excited about the Phat Cat. It does give me a familiar, characteristic rock tone. The bulkiness of the Paul is offset by the articulation of the Phat Cat, but its still beefy, full and clear and can pull off harder styles no problem. A very pleasureable tone with lots of drive. I can't make you try it but... you should! It's a joy to play on and is the most sensitive to playing and picking styles out of all the Duncans I've tried, which makes it awesome for rocking out.

Oh man, a PC in the bridge of a LP rocks so hard. That was my setup for a long time.

Re: Les Paul + Duncan For ROCK 'n' ROLL!

Duncan + Les Paul does NOT = rock n' roll

Just kidding, its a match made in heaven (or depending on how heavy of rock, hell)

Any and all of those pups will sound darn good in a LP, just depends what taste your after.

A custom for example will have a bit of a modern metal edge to it, where a C5 will be a bit more vintage yet still very heavy, like a PAF on steriods, where a PAF will give some classic rock sounds, you get the picture

Basically every passive bucker you listed is going to sound somewhat in the same ballpark, or at least the same sport.

Its just an issue of slightly different magnets, output levels etc that will give it the character.

Yeah! Get a Phat Cat if you want to HEAR what you're playing... or get one of those other pickups if you want to keep wondering "could my tone be more rocktastic and alive?" and keep swapping pickups until you finally try the Phat Cat and realize what you've been missing. This is your chance to break the mold and see what all the fuss is about - not just MY fuss. If you rock, the PC will rock. If you mellow, the PC will mellow. Scoop the mids, open the tone knob, and you've got crisp metal. Get it? Don't be a Les Paul/humbucker/lookatmeIhaveafattonewithoutanysoulorarticulationorvibe loser like all these other nerds!

Hey Strange,

I'm into exactly the kind of music you're talking about (Hellacopters, Supagroup, Supersuckers, Nashville Pu#$y, Gluecifer, Backyard Babies etc..)

I use 59s and they work great for this kind of music. Check out my band in my sig to hear examples of the tone. The chunky rhythym parts and main the solos are me. The other guy plays a tele and is doing more of the Johnny Thunders type fills and choppy rhythym - so you can hear the difference.

Rawk on,

- Cheeze
