Les Paul Neck P/U '59 or Jazz (PG in there now)

I have an '81 Les Paul Standard with a '59 Bridge and a Pearly Gates Neck. I like the PG but I am looking for just a tad more bottom and more of that Meniketti, Moore, Richrath singing tone in the upper register. Would a Jazz or the '59 be the logcal choice? Thank you

It sounds like you might like the 59n. It will definitely sing. I really like the jazz bridge pickup in a les paul neck too - nice balance and tone all round.

Hmm..interesting.....The "moore" tone is a2...and mismatched wind...really the best pup I've heard to nail that sound is the Burstbucker 1. Closest thing to that BB1 in the Duncan line is a PGn or Seth (BB1 kinda sits between them tonally)

59 will not have the mids, and the top end will be much brighter...clear. And the bass is much boomier. It's a GREAT sound, and I've had 'em ina bunch of guitars... but it's def not like Gary's old Paula.

Richrath..heh..good to see his name mentioned :bigthumb:..He always has some of the best Les Paul/Marshall tones. Live version of Riding the Storm Out anyone?? :D

I think a Seth would prolly be your best bet in the Duncan line. It's sings a bit better/is smoother than the PG without being as Boomy or bright as the 59n.

But if you're not stuck on duncans, I'd highly reccomend that BB1.

For more bass, you probably need to get away from the PGN and alnico 2 style pickups and go to an alnico 5 magnet humbucker. I think the Jazz or the 59n would be be logical choices. I'd go for the Jazz neck myself...it's clearer and although it has more bass like you want, it also has a nice, chimey top end with extended harmonics.

Yes, definately a toss up at the moment between the Jazz and the '59. The Jazz is a bit hotter, and both are A5 (Right?) I like the PG but I do miss the bottom end.

Meneketti & Richrath! Ahhhhhhhhhh - someone with a refined Palette for killer LP tone! Those guys are two of my personal favorites for just listening. I'll ignore the Gary Moore thing because that's a different tonal school IMO ...but he's cool too.

I'd say 59, although I think Richrath used SuperD's....I've seen some photos that are double cream hexes...ergo SuperD

The Duncan custom shop Deco 2 10k does a nice job getting that particular tone too. Of course, the amp and speakers play a big part also.

I have a pair of 59's in my Les Paul Classic, I actually like the full sound the 59N has there is definitely no shortage of low end in the 59n though!

Yes, definately an A5 for my taste, I want a bit more low end, not a huge bottom. I know the '59 will do the trick but I'm giving the Jazz serious thought. The sound samples are very close. I really appreciate your opinions and experienced observations.

Well, I ordered a '59 neck/w gold cover to replace the Pearly Gates, I'll install it Thursday. News at 11:00

59 set can't be wrong. Don't know if it will be "right" for Meneketti/Richrath...Good luck!

+1 for the Gibson Burstbucker 1!!!!!

Just put a '59n in last night. It's amazing! The sound clips don't do it any justice. I'm blown away by this pickup.

Re: Les Paul Neck P/U '59 or Jazz (PG in there now)

Well sorry for my lack of taste but why put an alnico 5 magnet into the pearly. (im not sure if it has one or not) but other than that i would go for the jazz. 59 sounds a bitt muddy to me.:yell:

The 59 is sparkly & bright. It's huge and I love it!

Re: Les Paul Neck P/U '59 or Jazz (PG in there now)

Just a quick update, My '59 came a day early so I popped it in the Paul tonight. My first impressions are that I like it better than the Pearly Gates Neck. I was initially concerned that it would have more bottom than I wanted and I found it interesting that it was actually a bit more treble forward than I thought it would be, probably due to the A5. That is a good thing for me. One thing the really pleased me was how perfectly balanced the guitar is now (I have the '59 bridge in there too) with the full '59 set. It blends beautifully with the bridge pickup, better, in my opinion than others I have sampled. It has a very nice tone above the 12th fret. Yes, I do think that it provides me with that Meniketti type Les Paul "whistle" that I have been seeking.

I'm still curious about the Jazz, but maybe another time, another Les Paul. This one is complete. Thanks to all for the valuable input.
