Honestly, the tophats (I'm assuming that's what you mean by "bonnet") are my preference. I've played around with the speed, tophat and "witch hat" knobs and prefer the tophats. (on most guitars that would be the amber historic style tophats)

It's not a "period correct" thing or anything like that. I've put them on my 71 Deluxe, even though they don't belong on there. I just prefer the feel of those knobs over any other knobs on an LP.

That's my only pet peeve about Les Paul's. There's nothing speedy about the knobs. I like to play with my amp cranked and use my volume knob to control my dynamics. It's a real magician's act to get to a Lester's vol. knob quickly
and back to playing. So for me the knobs on a LP are a bit more for aesthetics and less functionally. In general... On a burst, Tophats. Opaques,Speed. Goldtops? Flip a coin.

ok im retarded. i have tophat knobs. i saw a pic of tophat knobs with a gold insert, and they looked cooler.

I'm definitely a speed knob guy, the other ones just aren't comfortable for me and functionality overcomes looks in this case.

I like these - just replaced the black parts on my Lp with cream and gold. The old top hats were hard for me to grab for some reason.

I think, i'll go with Tophat knobs.. Really amazing looking knobs.. You can use them for dynamics as well, depends how you use them i guess, i am comfortable with my gibson knobs as much as i am comfortable with my strat speedy knobs... I just like Top hat knobs because of their old aged classy look !
