Is there a tremolo unit available that can be put on to a traditional LP tuneomatic bridge without having to carve the body etc? Does it work?

Yes, there's a trem called the Les Trem. It is a direct replacement for your stoptail piece. It acts kinda like a Bigsby, you won't get any Dimebag Dive-bombs from it, more like a vibrato. IMO it even maintains a somewhat vintage look. They run about $100 and stewmac has them that I know of.
