less harmful thread - which bassman circuit for mod?

Re: less harmful thread - which bassman circuit for mod?

alright, cool, and i'm guessing much like every other fender, the volume on 'tons of gain' and 'light crunch' are about the same, correct? As in it breaks up at, lets say 6, and doesn't get much louder after that, just more gain

Right, although the power amp stage doesn't "break down" as early as versions with a tube rectifier (6G6 or '59 4x10 Bassmans), so you would notice a difference in that respect, too. But generally speaking this is also true for the 6G6-A. And the amount of presence also plays a part in the perceived loudness, because it adds distorted highs into the mix coming from the power amp.

Maybe it would be a good idea to combine the 6G6 Bass channel layout (second negative feedback loop in the fourth preamp stage = less gain, more even frequency response, less distortion) with the power amp design of the 6G6-A (solid state rectifier, increased feedback = more headroom) in your modded Bassman. That way you would get the best of both worlds, because the 6G6 preamp sound is sort of recommended in the Fender Amps book. But I would try out both versions first of course.
