i need to get the following sounds at various times, not all at once
-smooth jazzy clean
-all heck about to break loose clean
-blusey crunch
-vintage high gain (deep purple, iron maiden)

needs to be $900 or less used, i've been looking at
-mesa rectoverb
-mesa mark III
-mesa DC-5
-hand built super reverb 112 clone and a pedal
-marshall jtm
-egnator tweaker 40/88 when it comes out
-DIY JCM800
-fender prosonic

since i'm related to a fender dealer, all new fenders are around 1/2 off

Re: let the amp search begin

yeah most amps can do what you want

i'd play a few vintage-style marshalls and fenders and see what gels with you. i wouldn't mess with mesa for a vintage style tone.

Re: let the amp search begin

get this for $350 new thanks to your Fender connection

forget your little wish list spec sheet and just go try this juicy little thing, or the combo version. Before you ask, "but does it do this, and does it do that other thing?" yes. It does. Go.

played the bandmaster vm, hated the distortion
the supersonic 22 isn't loud enough, the other guitarist in the band i'm in has a 5150 full stack

Carvin X100b Series IV re-issue.

Supposed to have a great clean channel.
and the dirty channel can get you all the way up into classic metal tones.

I have a V3 right now. It's great for Modern tones. Tubed with 6L6's.
But, I plan on picking up a X100B-iv as well for classic hard rock/metal tones. Retube it with EL34's.

That Mesa DC-5 will not get you there…. Had two trying to get there and sold them both because they just did not cut it!

Re: let the amp search begin

Not sure it's in your price range but the mesa express 5:25 covers a load of different tones, all of them pretty well.
Coupled with a good cab with good speakers and ya rocking, but it does need sensitive speakers compete.

Re: let the amp search begin

narrrowed it down to
-rectoverb
-super reverb clone+holy fire pedal
-tweaker 40

I don't think Mesa will get that tone you want. You love the Bluesbreaker right?

Well, I think the best option for you is the super reverb and a higher gain pedal. The holy Fire if you want it. Plus it will be able to keep up with the half stack (w/ pedal).

Re: let the amp search begin

^^ The tweaker wouldn't be bad either but if you can get that great discount on Fender, by all means go for it.
