Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

I love fuzz sounds, but for my own purposes I love it when it's somewhat in control but still gets that violin-like tone.

Problem is they can also get "woofy". Also, how do you use the Internal Trimmer to make it sound better (I find FULLTONE and all the pedals with trimmers have a similar effect when used.)

Currently I use a FoxRox NPN Fuzz. I usually keep the Fuzz around 7-8, the "grit" around the middle or less, and the volume to taste. I usually like my fuzz with a little delay.

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

I actually like the over the top almost out of control fuzz type sounds but I also like to be able to get a more controlled effect as well...thats why I love the Fulltone Ultimate Octave fuzz...between the amazing sweep on the tone ocntrol as well as the fat/bright switch I can dial in all kinds of different shades of fuzz.

I do like my other Fuzz TOnes but the Fulltone is the most user frieldly and versitile...My Meyer Axis Fuzz is also a killer souding fuzz but it can get out of control QUICK...I have others but those 2 are my favs.

Yeah, you have me sold on the Ultimate Octave
I might be on the lookout for an affordable used one

Ironically, so many were for sale locally, and the second I need one, I can't find it

That was me too...I kept seeing them for sale but the minute I decided to give one a shot they all dried up. Keep looking around they do pop up from time to time, they are well worth the cost and the wait to find one.

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

I am a dirt box junky and I have loads of them and love them all but the Expandora is a special treat!:laugh2:

Great unit if you like what it does, what it does not do is make a Fender sound like a Marshall, it does not give you the "Brown Sound", it does not sound like the best tubescreamer ever, and it is not a transparent unit for making your tone simply crunchy...it does have it's own voice.

It has a lot of volume on tap...to draw a comparison I keep the volume on my Rat well over half, most of the time it's pretty close to around 2 o'clock, maybe a tad more...with the same amp, guitar, set up, etc I keep the volume on the Expandora set at way less than half...around 9 o'clock or so!

It has Vol, Dist, and Tone controls and I find the sweeps on them all very useful. There are the 3 switches on the back that everybody talks about setting them in various points 9up or down) gives you different shades of crunch.

I have owned several Expandora units (3 I belive, all of them were the old style) and if you don't take tim e to tweak them to be honest they sound horrible but if you spend time with them you can dial in lots of cool tones...some that are very mild OD tones, some that are kind of nasty in an old school/70's kind of way and some that are simply mind melting but the more intense you get the tone the harder it gets to control...very neat pedal but not for everybody!

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

Does the Expandora give a good rhythm crunch?

Anyone wanna comment on the Fox Rox Cpt Coconut, Fulltone 69/70/Soulbender/Ult Oct, Roger Mayer, T Rex Mudhoney, Dunlop Fuzz Face - etc etc

Any comparisons you all have made?

The Expandora is not your usual dirt box...not bad just very odd. Im used to it but everytime I let someone try it they turn it off with in 5 minutes and ell me to take it back...

I have not tried the Fox Rox...

Here is my take on the Fulltone Fuzz units...

69 Pedal-Classic Germanium transistor fuzz, based on the Fuzz Face but with added controls for transistor "bias" and a control for "Contour" which controls the mids...if you're looking for the classic Fuzz Face type tone but know that the reissue just don't cut it then this is the fuzz for you...that said in my opinion the Analog Man Sun Face is a better Fuzz Face clone than the Fulltone 69 but both are great pedals.

70 Pedal-Based on the later Fuzz Face pedals, the later ones used Silicon transistors and not the Germanium transistors like the early ones...this is based on that era Fuzz Face which is what Jimi used later on. good unit has an added Mid control (Silicon transistors don't need a bias control like germanium ones do). Good unit but my fav later style Silcon Fuzz is the Roger Meyer Axis Fuzz, I think it's a better sounding unit that the 70 pedal but both are great units. Be warned both the 70 Pedal and the Axis Fuzz are NOT for the faint of heart...both of the units can get crazy quickly. If you want a nice, easy to use Fuzz keep looking, this ain't it!

Soulbender-Based on (pretty much a clone of) the old Vox/Colorsound tonebenders that were made by Sola Sound in the 60's...all those old Tonebender pedals varied a good bit so it's hard to really nail things down 100% but Mike did a good job with this unit. The Tonebender is the fuzz you want for the old Led Zep tones as well as the old Yardbirds stuff not to mention countless others! There are doxens and dozens of Tonebender clones out there and just like all the Plexi Marshall clones they all claim to be the closest and best...try before you buy!

Ultimate Octave-It is the world's most versatile Octavia. I love mine, killer fuzz that by itself is worth the price but then you get the switchable upper octave on it's own foot switch...great pedal!

The only Roger Mayer fuzz I have ever owned is the Axis Fuzz which is still one of my fav Fuzzs...the Fulltone thats closest to it is the 70 pedal and just like the 70 pedal it is not for the faint of heart but it is a killer fuzz!

I have not tried the T Rex Mudhoney yet but I hear good things!

The Dunlop Fuzz Face is a hunk of crap...if you want a cool looking paper weight to use at the office get one but don't actually try and use it...

Other good Fuzz units I know of are most (if not all) of the other Meyer units...The Classic Fuzz is like an older Fuzz Face (or like the 69 Pedal) that said my fav straight up FF Clone is still the Analog man. The MNeyer Page-1 is a Tone Bender clone with a few added features. There is also a good Fuzz Face clone from Thro Bak called the Fuzz Haze, Thro bak makes a few nice units. You could also look into D*A*M units...clones of old school units and they are real nice, pricy but nice!

Alsao I can'e mention Fuzz pedals with out mentioning ZVEX...the Fuzz Factory and the Fuzz Probe are just insane...if you have days to tweak and don't mind some of the wildest noises ever to come out of a 2x4 box get a Fuzz Factor...if you really want to go all out get the Fuzz Probe!

Good luck, have a Fuzzy good time!

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

Has any one ever tried to Daizy-chain SIX Pandora's, ala Billy F. Gibbons ?

Does anyone know in what songs/CD-tracks he actually used them like that ?

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

I couple my NYC Big Muff with a Boss DS-1 on my bass and the sound is huge. I use the Boss as a light overdrive and volume boost and have my Big Muff set on a medium-heavy fuzz. I play alot of Muse type stuff and it's perfect for me. If anyone wants to sample here are the setting I have it at right now. I would post clips but unfortunatley I don't have a mic

Big Muff

Volume - 2:00
Tone - 2:00
Sustain - 8:00

DS-1

Tone - 10:00
Level - 12:00
Dist - 9:00

Re: Let's Discuss Fuzz settings and usage

I think I am going to end up with a little collection of these things - they are all so different and my mood changes

anyone tried a Keeley DS1? I felt it was almost Fuzz like in that it saturates like crazy and then "blooms" sort of...

You have me VERY intrigued with the SOULBENDER - I want the JB Jimmy Page tone very bad!
