Let's Seymourize a few Dimarzio's

I see this question posted quite often and I think it would be a nice mental exercise to think about how we could use Duncan coils + baseplates and all available magnets to get as close to some Dimarzio's out there.

For example, the EVO: JB coil, Custom coil, ceramic bar magnet of the custom but hex polepieces to add brightness to that coil. That's my Seymourized EVO recipe.

Superdistortion? I'd guess, a Custom but with the double thick ceramic magnet and the large polepieces of the Invader (the long screws of the SD raise the inductance: you'll get the same idea with the huge Invader polepieces; the double thick ceramic magnet is almost a given).

Now, what to do with the Air Norton, for example? The AN is a 12.6K A5 pickup but with a brass baseplate to attenuate some high end. My thinking is a custom5 coil + screaming demon coil, and to emulate the air-structure, an unoriented roughcast alnico 5.

Would you mind playing along with this mind game?

Few pickups I think will be nice to discuss:

paf pro
superdistortion
air norton
crunch lab
liquifire
FRED
PafJoe
Satchur8
ToneZone
AT1

What we have to consider is how to get as close to the tones and feel of those pickups using SD bobbins and baseplates. We can hybridize to our hearts desire and mag swap till our noses turn blue with all the usual suspecs. That means, finding out what a brass baseplate does to the tone and work around that (Unless you wanna swap baseplates which is a pickle since they often don't fit properly).

Re: Let's Seymourize a few Dimarzio's

When I first saw the thread title, I thought this was a way to get a double creme Seymour Duncan. Buy a DC DiMarzio then send it to SD to be Seymourized into the SD pickup I need!

Still, I do like the idea as this would let me get some DiMarzio tones and stay loyal to SD.

...if I ever need a DiMarzio tone...

HAHA, true! As I say in the opening post, I see this question come up every now and then. Also, I thought it'd be nice to just talk a bit about this and see how far we can go with it.

About double cream: you can always hybridize a zebra and reverse zebra?

This!

My Seymourized DiMarzio suggestions:

DiMarzio FRED = '59/Demon hybrid with regular A5

Tone Zone = PATB-2/Invader hybrid with double thick A5

Crunch Lab = PATB-2/JB hybrid with single-thickness Ceramic

AT-1 isn't a dual resonance pickup, but I suspect a JB with UOA5 and a DIY "Virtual Vintage" mod to raise the inductance a little could get you close

That many Dimarzio’s are mismatched coils?

Do they still hold a patent on it or has it expired?

I know this is a few months late, but what is the "DIY Virtual Vintage mod"? I believe I have seen pics of a VV pickup, and it looked like some added metal pieces added to the underside of the bobbins. Not sure what the metal was, but I guess that matters too.

So if I understand, it's a way unique way to add inductance...but why did DiMarzio pick the way they did? What are the advantages? Are there other viable ways to add inductance?

And just to make sure I have a decent understanding of what adding inductance does, it tames the top end some (or is it more correct to say it addes low end?) and adds some output?

Buy two of any Duncan pup. One in zebra, and one in reverse zebra. Disassemble both, then put them back together to make a normal black and a double cream. Sell the black one. :D

Or a zebra set of C5 and 59n. Do the same thing. Now you have a double cream C5/59 hybrid.
