Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

I was looking through my collection of Pots so I could attach a Tone Pot on my 6 string with SH-8 Invader Bridge PU and I realized they look teh same and are Rated teh same 500K Ohm but they each have a different letter prior to the 500K two are a D500K Ohm, one is a A500K Ohm, a C500K ohm and a B500K Ohm. The A, B and D are Made by Core-Tek The C I have no Idea but the C was the one that even though it was wired as a Tone Pot it cut back output, I am thinking Possibly the 223K Orange Cap may be Kaputski.
Anyway what the Heck are The Letters For? DO They mean anything at all or just a Way to identify Batch's or Runs?
I am hoping somone know so I can make sure I am working on teh correct Pot for the Tone on my Ibanez RG 570 Custom I built.

Thanks :)

PS I also Just Realized Even though the Pots Looke Identical and Green one says 223J100V Atached to the D500K Ohm Pot and the Other says 473J100V with the A500K Pot, If I recall without looking for awhile to find my paperwork explaining it the .223 is the Caps Uf rating or something that would indicate I would want to use the 223 Pot and Cap not the 473 one I may be mistaken but is that more of a Cap used in Fender Guitars or something?
My Orange Cap I had Bought with a Special Resistor it was a Tone improvement and Vol Bleed Kit I got back in 09 when I just bought my Guitar and knew Less then Zero about them and it has 2 with a circle around it then 225P400V then under that 223K a Space and then 084C

weird, I've never seen anything but As and Bs on pots.

Usually A = audio taper, B = linear taper

No idea what the C and D are....

Re: Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

OK that was what I was sittinghere racking my brain about the Tapers Thanks, One would be the Ideal Taper for Volume and the Other is for Tone, I think A is the Tone one and B is the Volume one Correct? if so the A500K Ohm Pot I have with the 473J100V Cap would need to have the cap swapped with the D500K Ohm Pot unless D is also a Audio Taper Assuming I am not BackA$$wards like I get sometimes.
Thanks for the Reply.
BTW I apoligize in advance I somehow picked up a Bit of Dyslexia of sorts when I type The, I used to type The fine but I keep seeing teh I try to fix them but do miss more then I would like.

Re: Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

the other way around actually. Audio taper for volumes, Linear for tone.

Re: Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

Figures told you I may be Back A$$wards, I wonder why a A Pot has a 473 Cap soldered to it, It came that way from a company that sells PU's and Pre Wired Pots etc.
Strange.

Re: Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

dunno. I dunno where all you Americans get your pots but up here it's difficult to find any linear taper pots with short knurled heads for guitars. music stores only sell audio taper, my local electronics supply store doesn't carry ANY short head pots, and even Stewmac no longer gives the option of picking audio vs. linear taper pots.

My strat has one volume, my ibanez has two volumes, and my new strat is going to have a vol and tone, but unfortunately I will be using audio taper on both because I can't find any linear taper guitar pots anywhere!

I disagree
my Carvin and Ibanez guitars both shipped with linear volumes and audio pots

the C and D stamped on could be referring to the different material used in the resistor
such as Cermet or resistive plastic, etc

1MegC - 1 Meg Reverse Audio Taper pot. I gess, C- mean Reverse taper

Re: Letters Before Pot Ratings Mean ??

pot taper is preference as much as anything else. i prefer linear taper for everything over audio but a custom taper between linear and audio is what i actually prefer. the old hamer pots had a great taper
