Life of a pot

How long is a Fender pot usable? Does its age affects the tone? And how to tell if it doesn't work right? I have a three years old Fender pots I don't use anymore, can I reuse them? I heard that cheaper pots don't work right after a few months.

Re: Life of a pot

There are guitars around from teh 30s and 40s with original electronics that still work fine.

Just like there are guitars around from 2008 that already have shot electronics.

All a question of maintenance and proper handling ;)

Stock Fender pots are above average IMO. Pots don't degrade over time, but they can get dirty and scratchy in dusty or smoky places. If they worked fine when you last used them, and you kept them in a clean place, they should still be fine.

They don't go bad, like a loaf of bread. They'll eventually wear out with use, but that can take decades. If you're constantly doing volume swells, they'll age faster, but short of that, they'll be around a long time.

Long lasting pots are best made with an eye on quality, and the end user's use/abuse are the difference between a quality pot lasts fifty years, or five years.

Life of a pot - it starts from a seed, grows to a plant, then is dried, smoked, and enjoyed :)

I gotta stop doing volume swells then:banghead:
