Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

So, I just bought a body to make a cool Tele-Strat hybrid in which to showcase a NOS set of Joe Barden Danny Gatton T-style pickups I just picked up recently. I'm so d@mn excited, it hurts!

This was my inspiration:

Problem is, this body is ugly. Really ugly.

The picture actually DOES it justice...ha ha!

The body is even more of an odd, flat-looking tannish-pink in person and the grain sucks, no character at all.

It was stated to be African Mahogany, but I'm fairly certain this is one of the Mahogany imposters, such as Lauan/Luan (aka: "Philippine Mahogany") or similar. Who knows.

I CAN tell you it's among the heavier Strat style bodies I've put my hands on. Comes in at just under 6 lbs completely bare.

Here is the body:

Any thoughts on how to proceed? It has some type of clear on it, which does nothing for the look but protect the wood.

I don't have spray equipment and the budget is tight, so I won't be sending it out for a professional refinish.

What would YOU do to this pig?

If it already has a clear coat on it, I'd just leave it as is. It's really not that bad.

I think it's hideous & needs to be covered.:nervous:You could try solid orange gloss instead of the translucent orange from the inspiration picture. That would look just as cool.

No, it IS that bad! Ha ha! It looks like an unfinished cupboard door or table top in person.

The pic looks like a light brown color, but it's far more washed out looking and pink-toned in person.

Well, my tastes do not tend to reflect the norm. Your best bet would be to strip it, stain it and then Tru Oil it.

Do a Tele-influenced version of this (minus the Floyd, of course).

I would take that picture to your local Rockler store and see if you can match the color? The people there know woodworking pretty well.

Re: Liipstick on a Pig? Need ideas...

Sand it back to bare wood, add tint to Tru-Oil until you've hit cherry red, and go to town...

Guitar Reranch it with Nitrocellulose Lacquer, ooooh, aaaah...

** No need for spray painting equipment as GRR has many colors of nitrocellulose in spray paint cans for the do it yourselfer. **

Wet graphic novel pages with lacquer
Wallpaper with pages
Then clear over

I love it as- is! You don't know how hard I have had to work to get a "crystal clear"/ "natural " finish that doesnt yellow at all . It's not easy . Most of that re-ranch stuff turns things a horrid Orange color like some of the photos displayed in this thread. This finish on yours , Masta , looks almost like Fenders American Standard natural finish ( more expensive than painted) . The grain ain't bad. Looks well done. Don't touch it or I'll hunt you down and torture you in ways you can't imagine.

sand down that b*tch to bare wood, stain it (you can even use powder orange juice applied with a wet brush) and then you can finish it with oil (tru oil or boiled linseed oil) or rattle can clear varnish
