Lil '59/volume pot question

Hey guys...don't post much, but I have a little problem I need some advice on.

I put a lil '59 in the bridge position on a Strat, and the middle and neck are stock p'ups. I also put in a new 5-way and 250k pots, along with a .022 cap. I used the wiring diagram that's printable from the SD site.

I first wired the 59 according to the instructions: black to switch, green/bare to ground on the volume pot, and red/white terminated together. I had a phase problem with bridge/middle, so I switched the green and black, and got the result I was looking for.

The problem is that now the volume pot doesn't attenuate the volume properly...it's more of a volume cut, and not much of one.

I'm hoping someone can tell me where I screwed up.

Also, do you recommend 500k pots and a different rated cap? Thanks for any advice.

Re: Lil '59/volume pot question

When you reversed the green and black wires did you also move the bare wire from the green to the black wire? That might be something to look at. The bare wire is a ground wire and needs to be attached to ground...which is now the black wire since you moved it to ground. Lew

Thanks for the response, Lew...

Yes, the bare is now with the black, grounded.

On the diagram, it looks like the 3rd lug of the volume pot is bent back toward the back of the pot and soldered to the grounds from the tone pots and the cap. I didn't do it because it wasn't like that before. What might be the purpose of this, and would it affect anything either way?

I'm starting to wonder if I just don't have a bad pot, but it worked OK before the green/black exchange.

Re: Lil '59/volume pot question

The 3rd lug (actually #1) needs to be chassis grounded or your signal wont have a path to ground. No path to ground, volume pot doesn't cut out all the way.

Ground that lug!

Thanks, man...I kinda knew deep down that might be an issue. I'll get that taken care of ASAP. 'Preciate the guidance.

To further sweeten the pot with choice, you coul make that "joined wires" a switchable, then you can split that lil bucker. Nice for notch sounds, but no good alone though...

If you were going to go out and get a new pot, you could do a push pull that is..
