Lil 59 with Single Coils

Ok, so I went out and got a Lil 59 and wired it up. So far it seems like a pretty decent pup, though I won't know for sure until I do a gig tonight.

I'm curious about the bridge/middle notch position. Since the bridge position is a humbucker and the middle is a RWRP single coil, what exactly is happening when they're combined?

I'm also having some expected output issues. The 59 is quite a bit louder than the neck and middle. I have the 59 about as low as I can using the included surgical tubing, somewhere around 1/8-/32. I raised the neck and middle so they're at about 3/32nds also. How high is too high? When does magnet pull start to hose my tone?

Thanks guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mike

Re: Lil 59 with Single Coils

with both bridge and middle pups on they are in parallel the rw/rp doesnt really do much unless the bridge pup is a single coil then it will cancel hum in position 4.
as far as the output issues, yup the lil 59 has more output than most single coils. thats part of its appeal to many people, it lets you go to the bridge and push the amp harder.

to lower the output you need to lower the pup. do you still have room on the screws? if so then you just need to get more tubing or some springs. i havent had success mixing screws and tubing. i would start at the pup you use most and adjust the pup height to where you think it sounds best, then adjust the others to where you think they work best with the first

Thanks, Jeremy. If I add a swith to split the 59 will position 4 be more like a traditional 4th position?

Re: Lil 59 with Single Coils

I have one in a 54 Strat RI and its been VERY USEFUL and practical. It does what it says it does, but it is a verrrrry small touch nasal, and it's never going to be as full and sweet as a real HB, but then again there was NO routing!

I feel the notched position gets messed up when you use them, and its never soudned as good as the real singles could.

What I love about this pup is its DEAD SILENT and it gives you some classic HB tone and pushes the amp BUT in comparison to other SD single coil size HBs, it still has some sweet twang so you don't lose the Strat "thing" and still have that Fender vibe and mojo.

They are sweet in the neck too. If you want a Les Paul in a Strat, this might NOT be it.
