Lil PUs always ceramic?

Ok, here is a doubt. Hot rais, cool rails, vintage rails, duckbuckers, JBJr, lil screamin demon, lil 59. Why all true single coil sized HBs are ceramic? Is there any technical reason for not using alnico in the lil versions?

Re: Lil PUs always ceramic?

Just a theory, perhaps because its a good way to get more output. Then they would have more freedom to tailor the coil design to the sound desired.

Yeah the custom shop can provide lil PUs with alnico, but what would be the impact? A darker sound? Less output? Different wiring? Different impedance?

Also just a theory, but it may have to do with the magnetic field of a ceramic. The little guys are trying to simulate the same attraction of 2 full sized coils, that's a lot of area to cover with an alnico mag.

I mean they's probably have to do a quad stacked ceramic to simulate an invader or x2n.

Re: Lil PUs always ceramic?

The main reason is that there is a limitation on how close the N and S poles of an Alnico magnet can be to each other without the mag demagnetizing itself. The mags needed for the Li'l series have to be very narrow so the poles are very close together. As wonderful as Alnico is in all other respects, ceramic doesn't have that problem, you can make them about as narrow as you want without them demagging.

It doesn't necessarily happen each and every time but often enough that I'm guessing that's at least part of why Duncan doesn't mass produce Alnico versions. But as Evan says, you can get them from the Custom Shop.
