I'm a bit short on cash and looking for a do all amp and I was thinking this could be my baby. I'm just looking for a bit of feedback from you guys that have used them for a while and how they go over time.

Re: Line 6 spider IV 75

I haven't futzed with Spider in years. When I did, they sucked. That said, times and tech change.

IMO - with any amp like that, it's all about the knobs. If you can't suss a decent sound out of a Roland/Vox/SPider/Peavey etc...it's you, not the amp. That thing probably has more power and tone than an 80's rack of doom - and people peed themselves to get some of those sounds.

There ARE less fuzzy presets. You DON'T have to dime the gain. You CAN use the EQ properly. You DON'T have to bathe it in chorus/flange/phase/swirl or drench it in delay/reverb. You CAN create a decent sound by using the less is more approach.

I that range though I generally like Line 6 the Vox Valvetronix come off as a far better amp to my ears.

Re: Line 6 spider IV 75

I know a guy that plays one when I was playing with him the amp is definitely loud enough to gig with but I never heard him play the amp clean he would always play lead but with ditortion on and the highs were very sharp I remember but that might of been because he was using a strar or just aint set up his EQ right. None the less for what it is its not a bad amp and like Ace said less is more if you do use verb or delay use it sparingly just enough to sound tasteful. I use very lil to no verb at all when I play and if the room is big an with a full band the verb goes off.

Is it me or are there some seriously weird sounds coming out of that Blackstar amp ? Listen for about 10 seconds after 17:00. There are other occasions as well.

Yeah I don't intend on using to many effects but it would be nice to have them handy.

that's what I liked most about it, the knobs were pretty intuitive to an older guitar player.

Re: Line 6 spider IV 75

I'm in a similar situation as Phatzo, and the Spider 75 watt is the one I've been considering. I have a Class 5, but it's no good to me because I can't turn it up and get the sound I like in my apartment. And because of that, I hardly ever pick up my guitar anymore. The last few months have been a real drag for me because of this. The 75 watt is loud I've heard, but at least you can turn it down and it doesn't affect the tone. And you get more available tones than you would with the 15 and 30 watt versions.

Re: Line 6 spider IV 75

I've got one (75) & it sounds great, especially for practice at low volumes. Though I've gigged with it miked through the PA at small venues and have always been told it sounded pretty impressive.

The cleans sound amazing, you can get anything from great sounding honky/middy cleans, to sparkly, to bluesy, to percussive/funky...

With gain it's more complicated and you need to take time to dial your tones in right. Most of the hate these amps get is from people not taking the time/effort to get them to sound their best. Backing the treble off and messing around with the overdrive/mid frequencies/delay/reverb etc will get rid of fizz & give you a really nice fat, warm, very usable tube-like tone for rock... or a thick, punchy, tight, dark metal tone...again at whisper-soft volumes.

I don't use mine much these days but only because my little lunch-box Goldea 15 watt tube head sounds even fuller and bigger at those volumes.. ;)

Though I've had Line 6 desktop stuff for years, I've easily been turned off by the kids who are always sitting in front of the Spider amps banging out teh brootlz for hours and hours every time I go in a store. But recently, I bought a Spider IV 15 because it was the cheapest amp I could find around here -- new or used -- that actually sounded like something and could be a self-contained practice amp. It's amazing how far this stuff has come. When I started playing in the early 90's, an 8" 15W practice amp invariable sounded like dried-up dog ****. Now, these things are good enough and versatile enough that (I think) a beginning player could likely find some inspiring tones to get them started, instead of immediately wanting to spend more money on pedals or on getting a better amp.

I just gave away my bigger modeling practice amp to a friend; maybe a Spider IV 75 could be the replacement. I'm intrigued by the foot controllers that are available for those.
