Besides just reading the differences on the website, I would like to hear any opinions on the differences of these 2 pups from forum members. How do they react clean and with gain? I prefer single coil neck pups but its been years since I had a lipstick and I never had a p-90. What do you prefer and why....I know it depends on the guitar also. Step up to the soapbox.:reporter:

Lipstick pups are great for certain sounds but a P-90 can do so much more.

i have a lipstick tube loaded strat, and it sounds great, but like /\ said, they are limited. id go with a p-90.

How are they limited compared to a p-90?

Lipstick pups to me are great for slide guitar. The low output pup and the increased sound output from the slide work well together. you can get that nasty growl that is a familiar sound for more of a rock sound or an Elmore James sound.

They are also good for clean softer sounds as with most low output pickups.

A good P-90 will do all that and more. I just installed an Antiquity in the neck of a swamp ash strat, white limba(korina) conversion neck guitar and it just kicks butt!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the body was a little too light weight and was lacking in the mids, that P-90 just made it fat in the right places.

I once played a vintage Gibson Les Paul Junior with a P90. Holy crap! It was the only single coil I ever liked, and the only one I'd ever put on a guitar. From what I understand (and hey, let's face it, I'm talking out my *ss here) the lipstick will be bright and jangy, whereas depending on which P90 you get, you can go smokey (alnico II), bright (alinco V) or in your face (ceramic). As I understand it, the lipstick would be a one-trick pony, whereas the P90 would be more versatile...and thicker.

The Lipsticks are VERY low in output and usually work better as a set than combined with other pickups, however, I have used the hotter BRIDGE model in the neck & middle combined with strat pickups and it balanced out pretty well.

I like p90s in the neck, cause to me the sound is alot like a single coil but has a thicker tone and sounds warmer. The tone is very clear never muddy for me even with the high gain amp I use.

Thanks for all the input guys. It looks like the P-90 scored a shutout. Perhaps the lipstick excels at clean tones and the P-90 is better for dirty.
