need help with final details of strat pickguard, looking to put a duncan distortion or jb(trembucker0 in the bridge, a little '59 in the neck and need a good match for these two for the middle. I want that strat sound in this pickup but one that can bring something to the table in the 2&4 position. should I get something in the medium range to match the other two better or vintage?

Re: loading strat pickguard

Well, the only difference between the JB and Distortion is JB is A5 and Distortion is ceramic. The big version of the 59 is a common match for the JB and so is the single coil size one. SSl-1s are commonly used for singles with the JB and Distortion. If you want a noiseless SSL-1 get an STK-S4. If you need more heat, get an SSL-5. There are also the flat pole variety of both (SSL-2 and SSL-6)

That being said, I would recommend a Lil 59 in the neck, an STK-S4 in the middle and a JB bridge. That way you would be noiseless in all positions and have plenty of versatility.

Re: loading strat pickguard

I wasted another hour of my life going over the DD/JB thing without anything seeing anything definitive enough for my satisfaction.

This included Frank Falbo's deflections and Evan Skopp saying JBs have not changed since they were first made (as recently as 2010).

Is hum-cancelling important to you? If so, check out the Parallel Axis Stack, or the Classic Strat Stack.. If you go for a true single coil, the pickups will get darker as it goes up in output, which may not be what you want. So you either live with a volume difference, or try to match the volume, realizing that the closer you get, the less Stratty it will sound.

Re: loading strat pickguard

what makes you like the jb over the distortion, just curious as I wonder if distortion is not very versitle.

Re: loading strat pickguard

The Distortion and JB do what they do very well. That being said, versatility is not the strong point of either pickup.

Re: loading strat pickguard

The old pickups and the new ones are the same in terms of magnet type, wire type and gauge, number of turns, etc. However, the earliest JBs were wound on butyrate plastic bobbins instead of polycarbonate. And the bottom plates had the long legs like the current Antiquity / '59 / Seth along with single conductor cable.

That's exactly what those tricky freemasons want us to beleive! First it was Roswell and then the JB.

This was some funny stuff from that old thread that seriously brightened my morning! lol
