I just bought a 2 new sets of the Grovers for both my Strats and thought id see what you wise guitar animals use ? Grover, Schaller, Sperzel, Gotoh, Planet Waves, etc., and why. Thanks my fellow string fellows. :headbang:

Re: Locking Tuners ?

I usually use Grover, although I dont use locking tuners. I dont think you need 'em as long as you have a properly setup guitar. Its just a shortcut through acheaving a well playing guitar.

Re: Locking Tuners ?

you need em to change strings fast..oh yeah, they will keep you in tune better. every guitar should have them.

Re: Locking Tuners ?

I've got Sperzels on my Parker that came stock with it. I like them a lot, though I should probably change mine since the strings tend to go sharp after about a day of playing. Migt be because the tuners are old.

Re: Locking Tuners ?

Sperzel all the way, althought the others have also gotten great reviews for the most part. But the Sperzely just have 2 or 3 features, purely design, that I prefer ;)

Re: Locking Tuners ?

I agree with Zerb. The Sperzels are excellent tuners. The Grover's are excellent , as well. On a Strat, I just use the Fender USA Tuners that come on the guitar ( seeing as I don't really do any heavy Trem. work ). It IS extremely important to make sure the Guitar is set up properly and intonated, as was stated earlier ........:)

Re: Locking Tuners ?

If tuning goes sharp after using the whammy bar, it's more likely a problem with the strings binding at the nut than a problem with the sperzels. You can try some graphite in the nut (shavings from pencil lead) or something called "big bend nut sauce" at http://www.guitaristonly.com/ . Just put some in the nut slot of each string. Or have a tech check if the nut is cut correctly. My parker stays in tune better with a bit of graphite in the nut.

The guitar already has a graphite nut. The last time I got it set up, I got it filed to allow for thicker strings, but they failed to intonate it. I plan on putting it in the shop so it can be intonated in the meantime.

Thnks for the tip though.

Re: Locking Tuners ?

should check out the schaller ones
i got em on my music man sillhouette special

do the job pretty darn well!

Re: Locking Tuners ?

Sperzels in my Nitefly. Non-locking Pings in LesStrat.

The Nitefly stays in tune better than any guitar I've played.

My Parker Nitefly has a graphite nut, too. But tuning still went sharp after using the whammy bar. After taking it to two techs for set-up and still not getting the problem solved, I tried adding pencil lead to the nut and that solved the problem. If you hear a "pinging sound" when tuning, that's the string catching on the nut. Pencil lead isn't the best solution. A proberly cut nut is better. Also, if you went to a heavier guage string, you may need to change to heavier springs available at stewmac.com
I know what a nightmare tuning issues can be. However, I don't think intonation issues will cause your tuning going sharp. A tight nut will. But if it's only happening after a day of hard playing, I'd consider myself lucky and leave it be. Mine was going sharp after just one push on the whammy bar. Good luck

Re: Locking Tuners ?

I have sperzels on 2 guitars. A Strat, and a Custom made guitar. I love them, but I wouldn't say that Grovers or the others are bad. When I bought the sperzels the tech who installed them for me said they were the best (at that time). He was right.
