I don't know if it's cuz I have a few Newcastles in me or what, but it's taking me forever to restring my axe. I bought these years ago when everyone was claiming they were the 2nd coming of the holy one.

Anyone know a way to get that little annoying metal piece out of the hole (where the string goes) for good. (i.e. mod the b(a)stards.)

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

Don't want 'em to lock anymore. I use a floyd for my wiggle anyway, so the locking tuners aint doing jack after the stg goes past the locking nut.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

I have Sperzels and they lock fine. Every guitar should come standard with them IMO.

You aren't supposed to use locking tuners on a guitar with a whammy locking nut.

Yeah, I know. But at the time the were the "new cool thing", and I wanted to check 'em out.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

No reason for the locking tuners with a locking nut. I'd blame it on the beer. Locking tuners rock.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

I use four different types of locking tuner on my guitars (original PRS, Gotoh, Gotoh Kluson replacement, and sperzel), and all of them work well and save me time.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

Seafoamer you problem is that after the string breaks you can't get the little piece of string out of the hole?

I usually use mini-pliers.

I have aluminum polished Sperzels on my Highway 1 strat. They improved my tuning stability by 50 percent since i got em. I still cannot bottom out with my 6 screw... but the wiggleing never puts me out of tune anymore. It also takes 20 secs to replace a string (with stretching and everything...) I had no problems with them whatsoever so far.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

No, It's just when I'm restringing, I push the new string through the hole in the tuner and it hits that little locking piece a couple times before it goes through. What the hells that about? In the time I lost pushin' the damn string through the hole, I woulda had it all wound up the traditional way.

Like I said, could be the beer, but I'm thinkin' that I'll be all about the old school type tuners from now on.

P.S. Good thing I got this thing all stung up as I'm onto Mike lemonaid now. :)

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

i threw my locking tuners in the river. fnck i hate those things.

WOW DUDE! you already got the patience to learn guitar (and a theoretically interesting style of it as far as I gather), get some patience to gently push that thing through the hole ! :laugh2:

I guarantee you, locking tuners improve tuning stability over regular ones. (for locking nuts it doesn't matter though)

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

Fixed bridge sing hum strat here, Gotohs non locking. I find as long as my guitar is set up right, no need for them.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

locking tuners are a godsend.

i have them on my bass and theres nothing better than restringing without having to hold the string down, then it pops out and is all bent

why you have them on a locking nut axe i wont know lol :laugh2:

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

I think I might just wander over to the trading post . . . and wait for seafoamers post. :newangel:

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

I don't like them either. Schallers are horrible imo. While the Sperzels are nice for quick 'n ez string changes, . Also, sometimes you have a little problem with the pin sticking. It's not a bid deal, but give me the old nickel plated Kluson style any day.

I've had the wheel come loose on the low E string a few times while playing. It was dumping the strings all the way down. It went totally limp. I'm glad it didn't happen at a gig.

Ihave no experience with Gotoh. But I really like regular old tuners for simplicity and tone. Yes because they are lighter the tone is better imo. I just learned how to string and setup properly and NO problems ever even with crazy strat whammys.

In the dictionary next to "redundant" there is a pic of a Floyd nut with Sperzels. ; )

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

Yeah, these are the Schallers. I'm not ready to chuck em in the river yet. (& when I say river I mean Artietoo's house). I just wish that little metal piece would fully retreat from the hole so I can get the stg through on one shot.

Re: Locking tuning machines suck!

never had any problems with schallers or sperzels...
