lookin for an amp

i've been looking for an amp for a long time (mostly just prices and looks on the internet, but havent played out of it.) I want an amp that is priced between 300-600. I like to play a lot of rock/metal. I usually play iron maiden or metallica (try at least). I want an amp that has good distortion and also a nice clean sound.

Re: lookin for an amp

Try a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. It's all tube (2 6l6GC power tubes and 3 12AX7 pre amp tubes), 40 watts, 2 channel (clean and drive (more drive is really only a volume boost)) with a footswitch, 1X12 8 ohm speaker, line out for ext cabinet, effects loop and Fender reverb pan (2 spring). You can find these on eBay between $350 and $450 used. :smoker:

If you want more information on the Hot Rod Deluxe go to this web site:

Re: lookin for an amp

A hot rod deluxe being all valve would be an awesome amp for you to use with the right distortion pedal, because that would give you a ripper tone!

Dont rely on its own distortion to get you anywhere near iron maiden or metal tones though. But they are good amps which with the right pedals can rock the house down, ive heard lots of guys use them with great results.

But for something more "bedroom" level id go for a vox valvetronix over a line6 spider, i dont like the spiders one bit.

Another great thing for bedroom playing and jamming with mates at lower levels would be something which i used to have set up. A roland cube 30 with a line6 POD 2.0 plugged directly into the auxilliary input so it bypasses the amp. And let me tell you this with confidence....it sounds absolutely incredible!!! This setup will give you every single sound you would be looking for and absolutely sounds incredible at low levels, really it does! That one in particular i highly recommend.

Re: lookin for an amp

i play all iron maiden/metallica/other classic metal-rock music and i couldn't be happier with my current setup-TS9>peavey classic.

I know many amps sound good as stand alone units, but if you plan on playing lots of metal, grab a sweet fender twin off ebay and throw a modded ds-1 or ts-9 in front of it.

The cleans will literally change the way you play, and the way a pedal reacts to the twin is magnificent. I'd buy a twin just for the cleans. For your price range you can get a blackface off ebay and send a DS-1 to john (Stratdeluxer97) to get modded and have a metal tone to die for.

does anybody have any clips of the Hot Rod Deluxe?
Can your email handle a 3 meg file attachment? If it can I'll send one to you. I can't post stuff on my web site or FTP server from work.

Re: lookin for an amp

I would personally buy a used Line 6 Flextone III.

Re: lookin for an amp

I dont understand... really.

The guy is looking for metal tones, and you're suggesting a HotRod Deluxe or a Twin ?? I dont catch it.

You do really need a gainy crunchy machine, not a pristine clean one.

Here's my suggestions :

- Laney LC50 (combo)
- Laney Gh50L half-stack (600$ if youre lucky!)
- PV Classic 50 2x12
- Crate (all tube model)

Re: lookin for an amp

well i'm sure you'll recieve a wide variety of answers here...

if you're looking for versatility then i suggest a modeler...

the best thing to do is try alot of them out with the guitar you have...people do it all the time so don't sweat it...just bring your guitar into the store and play alot of stuff until you find what you're looking for...

with the modelers, i suggest Tech 21 & Vox Valvetronix stuff...it also depends on what size you're looking for, because the Roland cube stuff is pretty decent too!

after you've played on a lot of amps...go buy it used!!!! let someone else take that markup hit for you...!?!?

hope this helps at least some,
mike
