Looking for a gain and volume boost

Hey guys I'm looking for a pedal that will boost volume and gain at the same time. I used the didgitech screaming blues and it gave a gain boost but no volume. I have a cae boost line driver in the effects loop and it give a crapload of volume but no gain. I'd prefer to use something that's been battle tested so I've been looking at the sd-1 but other than that I have no idea. All I know is I don't want something with an eq tone knob is ok but no bass treble eq and I don't wan anything that sucks tone

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

The Xotic AC Booster is a good choice for that as well. Or something Kloney. Soul Food if you are on a budget, Archer or Tumnus if you can spend a bit more.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

Pedals like those mentioned above. Or, one of the dual pedals with a clean boost section and a gain or OD section like the Fulltone.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

how dirty is your sound without the boost?

/\ This, if your sound is already moderately to very dirty and you hit it with a boost in front, it's going to get more compressed but the volume increase will be minimal.

I was going to say Ac boost as well. It sounds like an sd-1 but with more volume, and more flexible tonal options and little extra definition. Id does have a separate bass and treble control but that is a really good thing IHMO because it means the pedal can work great with all kinds of amps and at all kinds of volumes and configurations. True bypass. No tone suck. Just a really great pedal that you will see on the boards of a lot of pros.
The real question (as jeremy pointed out) what amp are you using and how hot you are running the preamp tubes, but you can be pretty confident that whatever your amp is, the AC does the job of extra dirt plus extra volume pretty damn well.
Another short term cheap thing to try tho...take your CAE out of the loop and use it to kick your preamp right where it hurts. You will get extra gain that way because your preamp will distort harder.

MXR CAE Boost/ Overdrive. Has the Line Driver on the left side and a TS OD on the right.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

Mooer Flex-boost

That's a good option as well. It's an AC Boost clone and does a great job. I had one for a while, but it got used as part of a trade for a guitar. It was a great pedal.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

For a time-tested straight boost & gain pedal, the DOD 250 might suit you well.

But I'll echo others here: The best choice, and its placement, might hinge on how hard you like to drive your preamp section. And I wouldn't automatically reject units with bass & treble EQ- it can be pretty useful for subtle tweaking, even if you don't want broad reshaping.

I've been loving the sound of the Killing Floor. It is an overdrive. It is a boost. It is delicious! One knob is all you need.

I had one for years and it's the worst stand alone OD I've ever heard, but it works incredibly well with an already distorted signal.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

An SD-1 or TS will make your guitar *seem* louder because of the boost in mids.

Well it's an overdrive so it's not supposed to be a main distortion circuit. You use the OD to boost your amp to creamy saturation and the boost side to give you some extra volume during a solo.

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

there are plenty of people who use an overdrive as their main distortion circuit

Re: Looking for a gain and volume boost

My favorite gritty boost right now is a toss up between the right side of the BMF Effects Godfather II (which is the same as the Godfather) or for a different flavor the GB Boost, also from BMF effects

Absolutely. Still, some circuits work better for that than others. I don't think JohnnyTheKid meant to dis the pedal, just to mention that it's one of those that isn't at its best into a clean channel. He did say it's great into a driven amp.
