Looking for a New Guitar, Need Some Advice

So I think I sold my Les Paul Copy for around $215 so I need a new guitar for this band I'm joining. We're playing stoner metal, we all like Sabbath, the Melvins, and Sleep so pretty much anything that could cover that sort of music.

I thought about getting another Strat and loading a JB or maybe something a little hotter in the bridge but I don't know, the Les Paul was a bit beefier so maybe keep it or get another les paul type guitar.

I was also thinking about an SG...

You may want to consider an Agile SG. You've had an LP copy, so the SG would be different and would be a good fit for stoner metal, and the Agiles are a great Gibby-copy in my book. I really dig my LP. I'll be getting an Agile SG down tha road myself.

However, it will need to be professionally set up and have the frets hand filed if it's anything like my Agile LP. Then, slap in some Duncans or Gibson p/ups and you're good to go. When those things are done, the Agiles slay.

If you're from Illinois playing doom/stoner....have you caught any of Trouble live over there? They're starting to make quite the comeback.

Hmm, I may consider an Agile, not really diggin' the wierd body style though. Are there any other brands like this?

Avoid the Edwards SG. The neck is thin and weak, with no angle to it and a smaller body size than the original. The one I had felt like a toy.

My neighbor just got a Viper LTD. I like the look and feel of it. It is the $600 model though.

I wouldn't discourage anyone from an Epiphone. They are great guitars for the money, and if you can play a few, and find one with a good vibe, you can make it into a very very useable axe for about $200 worth of mods if you wanna be a perfectionist.

I played a MIC Epiphone SG just the other day and the thing resonated like nobody's business. Darn good tone from it too. Definitely a good piece of wood in that one. Don't confuse the MIC models with the MIK models that have the satin finish. The MIK one didn't have any life to it.

Epi SG - neck heavy
As are Gibsons....every one I've played at least. It's just the nature of the guitar it seems.

I'd pick up a good LP copy. You need a beefy, low-midrange heavy guitar.

What was it that made you sell your copy?

Re: Looking for a New Guitar, Need Some Advice

Just wanted something new, I already have a strat and I'm building another strat with all single coils but I need to get a body and a pickguard.

I think I might go for an SG since I've never owned one before. The LP copy was my first dual humbucking guitar so I guess I'll get another.

Re: Looking for a New Guitar, Need Some Advice

You are really limiting yourself by only looking at copies. SG's are great for sabbath once you mod them a little. But imo theres probably better guitars out there, you just gotta learn how to get sabbaths tone. try turning down the tone knob on the neck pickup while keeping mids higher then bass and trebel. Keep a decent amount of distortion. Works for my rig. whats your price limit?

there's always Tokai and Burny...check ebay.

just remember that there's no point to buying an SG with a bolt-on neck and keep that stoner groove mannn :smoker:
