Looking for a new pedal...compressor?

Ok so I'm starting to want a new pedal for my pedalboard. Currently I only have a Boss NS-2, but I can fit two more on there (Boss pedals, its a boss pedal case). I was thinking about getting a Boss compressor but I'm not sure what it would be like with my 5150. Anyone ever use both of these together? Any other suggestions on pedals to check out? Thanks!

Do you have any particular effects in mind, or are you just wanting a pedal for the sake of buying a pedal :laugh2:

I've heard (and will soon experience) that an MXR Phase 90 is one of the greatest effects to add to your arsenal for some good fun! Take a look, as well as at the EVH version.

Basically I want a new pedal :laugh2: But I did use a compressor feature on a multi-effects pedal before and I'm curious as to what it would sound like with my setup now.

Thanks Metalman, I'll check that one out.

Re: Looking for a new pedal...compressor?

A compressor basically takes u'r signal & compresses it. In other words: it makes u'r loud sounds softer, and your soft sounds louder. Compressing your signal.
So think of your 5150 with the above done to the signal.

apparently robery keeleys compressor is a big hit i havent personally used it but ive heard some clips and it sounds great

Re: Looking for a new pedal...compressor?

The Keeley Compressor is great. It's really transparent; doesn't kill tone. One reason I've never been fond of compressors is the noise level and how much it alters your tone. Hell, I work hard for my tone, I want it to stay that way!

The Boss Compressor IMO is noisey and very "splatty." It just sounds weird, and there's not much richness to it. "Cardboard" comes to mind. There are some great mods you can do to it (Indyguitarist has a really good mod sheet), but the Keeley Compressor still trumps it.

Re: Looking for a new pedal...compressor?

I'm not sure how useful a compressor would be in conjunction with a super high-gain setup like a 5150 II, but they are useful to have around.

Do you own a good wah? Reverb/Delay? Chorus? I think you'll find those much more practical.

Yeah, sounds like a compressor might not be a good choice, at least for me. I should look at getting a delay or reverb, considering my 5150 doesn't have any reverb. I know Boss makes a few delay pedals, maybe I should look at those. Thanks everyone!

Re: Looking for a new pedal...compressor?

The pedals I KNEW I was going to buy when I sold my rack and bought my amp were a compressor, OD or distortion (for lead boost), wah, delay, and chorus. Then I added a Phase 90 for kicks and I'm all set :).
