Looking for a pair of mics for home recordings

I've been hunting for a decent mic, preferebly two identical of them for stereo recording, for a cheap. Of course, the basic answer would be to get pair of Shure SM57... But with all accessory, that would still cost at least 250€ new, and they're completely nonexistent on used market. I'd prefer to keep the price under 200.

Came across these:

150€ used. Do anyone have any experience or opinion about these?

I'm open to any advice with this. I really have a little knowledge about microphones in general.

Guitar recording, at least for now. I have pair of cabs I would like to pan left and right.

You wouldn't want those mics for guitar cabs, they'd be more suitable for acoustic guitar.

Look into a pair of SM57s or maybe Audix i5s and don't worry about them being matched. I routinely see both selling used for $50-60.

+1 for SM57s, especially if you don't already have some, as they are very useful for more than just guitar

Another vote for 57s. I've used them for acoustic guitars, guitar amps, and melodica. Really useful.

You can use 57s on just about anything, including kick drum and drum overheads. SDCs are much more use-focused, and electric guitar is generally not one of them. There is also very little reason to have two mic's for a single guitar cab unless you are mixing and matching different types (which I would not recommend to a beginner in any event).

Yup, used 57, and I would just stick with one for now. Whats the reasoning behind recording 2 cabs to pan instead of double tracking or other techniques?

I'll then just hang on if any used sm57 pop on the market. But there's practically one place online in Finland for used music gear, and there's very little decent mics on there. About 50 % is cheap crap and 45 % is out of budget for my use. If I don't get lucky, I'll just buy pair of them new.

I have two otherwise identical cabs, but other is closed and other open back. They also have drivers with slightly different frequency range. They blend so well together piled, that it seems no-brainer thing to record them as such as well.

Probably an option I'm going to take, if something doesn't come up elsewhere:

What do you exactly mean by same source?

Is it probable I'm going to run into that problem, if I have two cabs separately miced 1-2 metres apart?

Same source = same performance.

2 cabs being powered from one head = same source

Phase will most definitely be a factor. Which is why I recommend going with one and learning from there before stepping into 2+ mics.

And I know your cabs sound great together in the room, but I would still highly suggest starting with one, as putting a 57 up to a cab is going to sound a lot different at first.

There's another big outlet in Germany, that I can't for the life of me remember the name of. Other than that, Woodbrass maybe? They always seem to have a deal on, but no stock mind you :-S

My band has used the CAD TSM411 side by side with our 57s and they are almost identical. Some guys in the band even like the CADs better. The upside is the CAD is $30 on most sites. We bought one to check it out and ended up getting a couple more during an SDOTD.

Wow. Seems really great.

If they just we're sold around here... Only couple of them on ebay in Europe, and they cost almost the same than sm57 on thomann.

Well, I generally prefer to jump in head-first. Especially when there's nothing to go wrong if I try. Fastest way to learn you know...

I found the mics.



Bang & Olufsen m08 pair. Cost 100€ used. I decided to trust the name with these, as I couldn't find any info about them and couldn't try them out before bying. And scored! They're very linear and clear sounding. Doesn't seem to have any kind of "tone of their own" at all. Great pair of mics!

Phase issues with just two mics seem pretty easy to tackle really... I read few articles, followed the 3:1 rule with mic placement and it sounds perfectly good now.

I post example when I have time to do some recording. And get something decent I dare to upload...
