Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

What do you guys recommend, i have tried a number of pedals but I still havent found a good pedal that I can use for light to moderate overdrive, and I mainly set my amp on clean and click in my pedals for disotrtion and overdrive. What I want is somehting very smooth with no clipping, crackling or buzzing but that you can hear every note in a chord. What do u recommend? the ones i had in mind were a hotcake and a boss sd1 Super overdive.

Well, depending on your budget, the Voodoo Lab Sparkle Drive is great, true bypass and there's a knob so you can blend the clean sound in along with the overdrive. This gives you nice sustain without being too fuzzy. The Ibanez TS-9 and TS-808 reissues sound good too. My brother swears by his Boss overdrive.

Ibanez Tubescreamers do light/moderate overdrive well IMHO.

If you need something heavier, the Crowther Hotcake is great.

Hey Dills

Hotcake and TS-808 both sound great, but it's also worth your while checking out the G2D pedals...

I would guess either the Creamtone or the Custom would be good for what you're looking for. I haven't tried the Creamtone but I own the Custom and the Morpheus, and they're both awesome pedals.

Hot_Grits may have tried the Creamtone out. You could always PM him.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Maybe either the Barber LTD or Analogman Silver Mod?

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

For smooth overdrive I say Boss Overdrive 3, it has a somewhat darker and cleaner tone with a loooooong sustain, which fits a jazzier style perfect (IMHO). It can off course be used in the drive channel too, for a real rock sound.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Have a TS-9 modded by John STRATDELUXER97 Smooooooooth. Really.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Keeley TS-9 Plus. :) I imagine most of the other modded TS pillows to TS-808s are close to the same though. TS-808 is a real smooth overdrive. I would deffinently get something modded by someone who knows what they are doing, and adds higher quality inards to them. I think that is the ticket to a good pedal now days.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

One of John's modded pedals would probably be the best and most economical way to go. I don't know for sure, but he may even be able to customize his mods a little to incorporat smoother gain or less gain.

Otherwise, I really like the Fulltone Fulldrive II. Yeah it cost's about $200, but it is the bomb. Great gain sweep and range, and there is a built in clean boost. Really nice.

Buy yourself a reissue TS808 and have someone that really knows what they're doing mod it for you...

Nah...my $40. TS-9's that you modded sound better than my $150. TS-808! Or are you saying if I sent you my TS-808 you'd make it sound even better than my TS-9's that you modded for me? Is that possible? :smack: :laugh2:

I'd say: spend $30. or 40. on a used Boss DS-1 or TS-9 and then send 'em to John.

My three favorite overdrives are: TS-9 (modded), Boss DS-1 (stock) and Fulltone '69. Maybe the '69 qualifies as a fuzz tho.

To me, a good overdrive should clean up to almost perfectly clean when I roll down the volume on the guitar...only the DS-1 does that.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Look up the dave ulbrick 12axe pedal on harmony central, then see if you can get in touch with him or find one used. He's based in melbourne, makes these things himself, they have true bypass and are pretty much exactly the distortion you describe...smooth as anything and clear as day.

Dont know how you would get one, but im sure if you wanted one off him he would send one out to you if you paid by credit or something. Or if you know people here in melbourne you could get them to send one to you. Really is a great smooth pedal.

Re: Looking for a really smooth overdrive pedal

Try a TS9dx - about the same price as the regular TS9 or TS-808 but with more sound options/settings....Your ear can be the judge........When I bought mine I first tried all of them side by side in the store....I figured for the money the TS9DX was the most versatile...But different sounds for different ears.........

I have the sparkle drive and I can't really recomend it for distortion. Now a slight overdrive/dirty sounding tone is what this thing is great for. It does sound great though.
